IPMS 2015 Nats - Sci-Fi, Space, and Other Stuff
Posted by Real G on Monday, July 27, 2015 6:29 PM

For your perusal and general entertainment, I have uploaded some photos of the stuff that the scale guys don't care about:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ntizumi/sets/72157656447492995

By no means all-inclusive, just things that caught my eye.  The model turnout was pretty good, the lighting was abysmal like in 2009.  There was a downlight that was burned out over one area that made it especially hard to photograph, much less see, the models. The lady with the motorcycle and the MaK-like racing car suffered as a result.

Thanks for posting those!  Nice selection of a category.  Couldn't make it to the National, so seeing photos of the entries is the next best thing.

Stik and Gaf,

You are most welcome! I apologize for not doing extensive coverage, as I had not thought about posting them on line.  There were a tremendous number of models of all types on the tables, so it would be a formidable task to take shots of all of them then sort the lot!  Some folks are up to the task but not me.  I'll post photos of the other genres shortly.

For those who never made it to a national convention, it is worth going once just to experience the model overload!

I know what you mean. I went to my first (and only) Nats on '07 when our local chapter hosted here in Anaheim. It was indeed a very impressive experience. That is one reason that I am so adamant on other threads about another Nats being held out this way again that I can make it out to. I want to go again, but long distance travel is out, so someplace within overnight driving range at most would make me a happy camper.

Stik, I also attended the 07 Nats and had a blast!  There were a lot of mecha models on display, no doubt due to the area's interest in anime.  I'd also love to see another west coast venue, as I have to cross 2,500 miles of ocean just to play at any Nats!

Right?  I stared a long time at that finish!  It makes me feel pretty good that a US kit maker made such a nice sci-fi kit, and a modeler gave it such an excellent finish.

If Gundams are your cup of tea, every November here they have a show/contest/event in Fullerton. I suppose that having Bandai's HQ nearby, and as you said a big fan base has something to do with it.

Love the Ronald McRobo. The Trek stuff is starting to scare me, aztecing and extensive lighting effects are now de rigour features.

Well, my son is trying to get me into Gundam now. Today he showed me an episode where the storyline begins... or at least one of them. Kind of wants me to go the LHS where they have a good selection of the kits tomorrow...

BashMonkey, I know what you mean about Trek models.  Their designs almost demand lighting effects to look correct, and the Aztec patterns are frighteningly intricate.

Stikpusher, beware the slippery Gundam slope!  I got hooked in 1983 just buying a kit on a whim.  I used to be a scale-only, Japanese sci-fi snubbing type.  Bandai offers an entire world of model kits that the plane-tank-ship-car guys could never imagine.

Axeman,

I know!  I kept going back to that figure to look at it.  I really liked the overall presentation, from the sculpting of the figure, to the paint job, to the backdrop. Those gold chrome glasses were mesmerizing!  Cool
