Adamski UFO / Haunebu
Posted by qlabs on Friday, November 6, 2015 3:03 PM

A while ago I purchased the Hand & Head Adamski UFO, they also make a Haunebu, which is the same ship but with Luftwaffe markings and guns and landing gear.
I opted for the classic sci-fi Adamski version. A limited number come with a nice small rolled poster of the box art, which I will toss in a frame, it's a pretty neat picture to have on the office wall.

I was feeling a bit of frustration on my AT-ST build and wanted something to get done quickly for a sense of accomplishment, cue this quick-ish build.
(clicking on any of the pictures will enlarge them)

The kit is well molded, though some of the sprue attachments are a bit thick, overall everything fits very well.

I'll lead right into some of my assembly photo's to date.
I started off following the instructions, console first.

Console and lockers glued to the base.

A splash of paint. That is dollar store craft acrylic thinned with warm water and mixed vigorusly. I was really pleased with how it turned out as it's the first time I've used it. I was figuring I can always take it off if it turns out badly but it is a very smooth finish and I'm going to start using more dollar store acrylic from now on.

Console paint and screen decals added. I was really pleased with the decals, very crisp and no edging at all to them to trim.
The lower blue sections will all have decals inserted into them so I wasn't too concerned with the misc paint getting in there.

Masking the centre tube.

A coat of clear blue. Tamiya acrylic Metallic Blue X-13.

The finished joined halves.

I decided to add some extras to cover the seam so I pre-painted and cut some evergreen 2.5mm u-channel(item #263)
The blue tube stuck on a thick paintbrush makes a great way to handle it without the chance of fingerprints.
You can see some of the dollar store paint in the background, all the paint for a buck, yes please!

Next up, adding the decal and painting the main viewscreen. Again, a very sharp decal!
Though the picture might be a bit blurry, I'm still learning this camera.

A little underside painting. I defaulted to zinc chromate. Who knows what aliens actually use, but these ones use zinc.

All three secions assembled.

Now I just had to give it some flair, it looked too boring. Misc hoses and whatnot added from the misc scrap bin. The reason I love sci-fi models is that you can just make this stuff up :)
It'll need one more coat of paint then pick out the hose details and give it a few light washes to bring out the detail.

Some test fits of the major components.
I also decided to use the kit idea of having it partially removable, however I want a complete section to come off instead of taking multiple pieces off. So this shows rough test fit and marking the lines to cut the saucer cap.

You'll see a little paint peel, that was me using the wrong tape while testing the masking line... looks like that'll need to be done over again.

Marking the top half for painting, I want to paint the top and whole craft silver but the interior left zinc chromate.

That's all for now, I took photo's while building and forgot to do progress posts so that was it for the mega photo dump.
More to come as I get time to chip away at it.

Thanks, yeah I thought of printing a new decal with an actual death star on it just to see if anyone caught it.

Another update as I had an hour or so to get some more done.

Glueing down the top rings.

I put a backing on the main screen so it looks smoother when the section is removed.

The main clear tube is installed.

There was some visible light around the base of the tube so I made a ring from some square stock. It became a perfect fit once it was glued in place.

The base got scratched up a bit on one of my ring attempts, so it'll need to be touched up/repainted.

And finally, putting some filler in to make everything nice and smooth. Sanding to come!

All the bits have been sanded and a quick coat of zinc to get all the inside bits prepped.
Most of it won't be seen but I like to get it all covered just in case.
Once it's dried it'll be time to pick out those hoses and then do a wash to get in all those crevaces.

Here is a post action shot of it just after finishing.

While Im waiting for the paint to dry fully I decided to have a look at adding the seats to the cockpit. I had painted them in a dark metallic but I'm not too happy with them.
The kit seats are a bit thick and 'clunky' so I've decided to scratch build some new ones.

My goal is to do something like this image I found on a google image search.
I'll have to add a cushion once it's build and seats and buckles. But the bucket should be roughly this but on a pole instead on mounted right to the floor.

I've traced the outline of the stock seats to get the rough dimensions and put it onto some sheet styrene that is just a bit thinner than the stock seat. 020" sheet.
I put a bit of angle to the seat back and a curvature.
Square holes are marked out to be cut for the seatbelts.

Cutting and assembly next. My buddy John has offered to make a silicone mold of it so I can have 3-4 identical seats and use them again on other projects. Sounds good to me Cool

A little bit of seat redesign, make it a bit easier to assemble. A few cuts and a few folds and I'll have a seat ready to go.

Pretty awesome! Like the zinc chromate interior. On one of those alien conspiracy shows some guy was going on about someone finding an crashed UFO with General Electric written on some of the debris. He then went on about the two types of flying saucers, the alien ones and the ones built by the US government from the back-engineered Roswell crash. Confused

I have no idea what scale that would be but Reaper does a couple of 28mm 'grey' figures, they come out pretty close to 1/48th.

Here, here, and here.

Thanks I'll check that out. I wish the kit came with figures/aliens/people but sadly it didn't. I was tempted to make my own but if there are some pre-done one's I'd be down for that.
Thanks for the tip on those.

I had to pop out and about and stopped at the local hobby shop as I was near by, who can resist it? Huh?
Grabbed some different Tamiya silvers to try out for the final outside.

Then a quick pop into Wallmart and couldn't resist looking down the craft section to see if they had anything that jumped out at me at a cheap price.

I grabbed some nice fine brushes as my local hobby shop was all out, for $3 for the pack, not a bad deal and some different silver and metallic acrylic paints as they were a dollar, so if they aren't any good they can go in the kids craft bin.
And a treat for the kids, we stopped by Wendy's and what was staring at me but a giant stack of paint miking cups. Someone had put them in a dispenser on the condements couter with the ketchup, who does that? Confused
I asked the nice old lady there if she would mind me snagging a couple extra for mixing paint and she said sure, I didn't want to just take them.

Now it's time to put all these good finds to use and maybe get a little more complete this weekend.
