About what scale is he? From the tools he looks about 4in/10cm tall. 

And it looks like the joints are made to be poseable? 

This the Bandai 1/12th scale Sand Trooper. Like all of Bandai's 1/12th figures, it is fully articulated, molded in colors and comes with decals and stickers. The nice thing about these kits is that they can either be a basic but complex snap kit with no glue needed or a nice opportunity to detail a figure with as much weathering and highlighting as you want.

I favor using a mix of the decals and stickers. However, Bandai's decals do not conform well with decal softeners and it's sometimes best to paint the model instead. A good example is the shoulder plate on the Sand Trooper. Neither the decal nor the sticker lay flat. So, unless you plan to leave it black, It's best painted orange or white.

Good looking WIP. 

I have this kit and Boba Fett in my stash, and am considering these as a change of pace from WWII aircraft while I am out of work and looking for my next opportunity. So having painted my current picture, I obviously have to build whatever I have the supplies on-hand to build with (paint, putty, etc). 

Do these kits need to be painted? I am leaning toward yes but I wonder if it is really necessary? What about seams? Are they visible and in need of filling?

Only the legs pose a real problem - these aren't the greatest despite the glowing reviews on other peoples' builds.  The shoulder pauldron is usually either black, or white. I would just spray it over with white primer.

Chris, cant remember which pauldron is the officer and which is grunt..there is the orange color also.

That is a commander from what I understand. I think that is the best scheme, my favorite anyway..looking forward to it!

I didn't have the time to do a lot of scale modeling lately but I finished one arm. 

I like it.   Do they still sell this kits?  My wallet hopes not.       gk

   These Bandai kits are brand new. They just got the license to produce Star Wars kits a little more than a year ago. So let your wallet lose! Hahahaha.

I am easily amused and therfore easily distracted. All I need is something else to work on, but these figures look like fun to make and display. Thank you for the info. ( I think  ).      gk

Yeah, looking at your work here and Scarecrow Joe's Boba Fett they look like pretty nice kits. Nice work so far!
