Minbarri Sharlin Battle Cruiser
Posted by NucMedTech on Wednesday, February 24, 2016 10:36 AM

Hi everyone! A little of the beaten path for me, otherwise not a Star Wars model. Smile

This is from the Babylon 5 series. If you are not familiar a brielf synopsis follows:

The Minbarri ( one of four main species in the series) were encountered by the Earth Alliance, who, in a very bad mistake, attacked and destroyed the Minbarri cruiser. The Minbarri declared war (Earth/Minbari War) and routed the Earth Alliance. The Minbarri suddenly stopped thier attack just before assaulting Earth itself.

The Sharlin cruiser is very organic in shape and style, which is a stark contrast to the Earth Alliance's destroyers. Kind of like a fish in space. Anyway here are the pics.

There were quite a few ship designs that I like from this series, unfortunately not many of them were kitted. Hope you all like what I was able to accomplish with this kit and thanks for taking a look.

Hey wow Stephen, that's one of my favorite SF ships!!! I picked up the same model, I think there was only one resin garage kit, way back when the show was still on the air and she's lingered in my stash since then. As a couple of big chunks of resin I wasn't sure at the time how to assemble and paint her.

That was about fifteen years ago!?! Gosh I need to pull mine out and actually build her- if mine comes out half as well as yours I'd be thrilled!

Beautiful work!!! Yes

Gamera - Thanks for looking in! I like this one too, it is a unique design. You really should get yours out of the stash! I had no real problems with this kit, it went together easy enough. It had some micro bubbles but nothing to difficult to take care of.

Super cool! I love the look of all the Babylon 5 ships. It's been a few years since I've watched the show, I should get the DVDs out...

Nuc,

It does look impressive! I like the design of the vessel. Unfortunately, I've never seen the series. I guess you can call me Sheldon!

Lol Still, great job!

Silentbob- I was thinking about getting the dvds also. Hastings had them for around 12.00, maybe I should go back and get a couple seasons.

Hogfanf- I suppose you also think Serenity will be on forever. Big Smile It was a pretty good series. I did not like the first season but it does get better after that. You can kind of follow the progression of the CGI in this series, really bad at first but it improves as the season goes.

Thanks guys for dropping by.

I was fooling around on YouTube last night and found two clips from the TV movie 'Babylon 5: In the Beginning' about the Earth/Minbari war. Lots of great shots of the Sharlon and some of my favorite lines from the series.

My favorite TV series of all time though yeah I'll admit too the first season was kinda slow and the fifth was pretty weak. Two though four were incredible though!

PS: Ok, you might have to click them to go to YouTube, the windows are kinda small here.

Wow, I just assumed you had seen 'In the Beginning'! It ran during B5s fourth season I think. There is a DVD out with all the 'movies' on it:

'The Gathering': pilot for the series, not very good but interesting to see how it started.

'In The Beginning': The Earth/Minbari War, fantastic, one of the best things they did.

'Thirdspace': Really neat story about the B5 guys opening a gate to a Lovecraftian dimension by accident, great!

'River of Souls': Another story about the Soul Hunters, good story but a few annoying things here and there.

'A Call to Arms': The Drakh attack Earth after the Shadows leave the galaxy. Cool story but as a pilot to the failed 'Babylon 5: Crusade' series it feels a little empty now- kinda like Firefly- it sets up a story but it never gets finished.

SternO, Thanks for dropping in. I really appreciate the comment on the painting. I did this free hand, no masking. It came out well enough but I still need a lot of practice before I get a flawless finish.

I know I have not seen all the B5 episodes and I have not seen any that you have mentioned. I saw most of season one on tv and then caught them sporadically and usually not in order. I bought season 4 (I think it is season 4) on dvd. Now I think that I will just have to get the rest and watch the whole thing.

edit: It just occured to me, maybe it will be on youtube like they have Crusader.

Oh, I never thought about checking YouTube for entire episodes. I picked up the whole series as one of the first things I bought when I got my first DVD player.

You might want to check for 'Crusade', I didn't pick up the DVDs for it since there's a course no ending. Not even a movie like 'Firefly' - the series just left you hanging when it was canciled.

Finished mine off today - scratch-built the side pods to get the correct shape.

Gamera
the windows are kinda small here

When you use the Insertt/Edit Video link, under Width, enter a value of about 750, that's a bit closer to the full available width here in the reply area.  Don't sweat the height, as it will be proportional unless you specify something.

Yeah, a cool series.  J. Michael Stracznski actually came up with the entire five year story arc first.  Then, the outline was set up, and various "placemarks" put in for story arcs within the series.  Which made the project very hard to pitch.  But, luckily for us, it did greenlight, as it was definitely not your standard space opera.

Concur on 1st & 5th seasons.  Firest was tenative becasue it ware really made as if every episode was a pilot, with cancelation loomimg over every episode.  Fifthe season, the writing (NPI) was on the wall.  Hard to keep up all the foreshadowing and suggesting of future arcs if there are not going to be any more.

Looks Fantastic.  As you can probably tell B-5 is my all time favorite..  A while ago I put some lightwave models of the B-5 ships into a game called klingon academy.  I had to track down the models authors and get permission to use them.  I remember it was a pain in the butt because the models were so complex that I had to "cut" them into smaller sections and have the game treat the sections as separate ships.  But it was fun being a first one and blasting the bejesus out of the federation and klingon ships
