Galactic Cruiser LEIF ERICSON...gone TREK
Posted by gregbale on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 1:02 PM

This is my take on Round 2's much-lauded repop of the old AMT Galactic Cruiser Leif Ericson---which I first encountered in my LHS, back in the '70s, as the glow-in-the-dark 'UFO Mystery Ship.' Originally intended as the first of a series of 'Strategic Space Command' models from AMT---and advertised on the box-sides of the first-release Star Trek kits---this was in fact the only kit of that envisioned 'side-series' ever released.

It was designed by Matt Jefferies---the same gent who designed Star Trek's TOS Enterprise. When Round 2 brought them back, I thought I'd do at least one to honor its prolific designer by putting it back squarely in the 'Star Trek' universe---as a historical antecedent of the TOS-era, a pre- (or early-) Federation survey vessel named after---who else?---the 'father of the Jefferies tube.'

Build was mostly OOB, though I built a new 'box' for the internal scout-ship bay to add access hatches and a bit of detail. I blanked off the open engine shrouds with some 'waffle' pattern styrene sheet I had---part of some long-forgotten packing material for something or other---and painted it metallic red for the 'intakes,' and metallic blue for the 'exhaust.' I used kit parts for the engine core as external detail on the 'wings,' but I didn't want to add too much surface detail---wanted to keep the 'uncluttered' TOS design aesthetic. Photoetched hatches were a small sheet from Paragrafix, though I'm not sure it's still available---didn't find it in a 'quick glance' at their website.

Decals/markings were made up from online images and printed on my trusty HP inkjet. The 'United Earth Space Probe Agency' was quoted at least once in an early TOS episode as the 'operating authority' for the starships---I think before the writers had settled on 'Starfleet'---so I used some of the neat insignia folks have devised and shared online, and made mine an older UESPA vessel.

A fun project. Hope you may enjoy the photos.

Looks really nice, Greg.

Which re-release was this?  The glow in the dark version, or the one with the "lost" parts and lights?

Thanks. This was the glow in the dark version---if you look at the 'nosecone' photo above, you can see I left it partially in its 'glow' state, just as a little nod to nostalgia: that's the version I built 'back in the day.'

Nifty idea there Greg and really nice work on the pre-shading. Love her!

Nice job. I just picked one of these up at an Ollie's closeout store.

Good job on that one.  I built the original kit when it first came out.  It even included a small flexible record.  I ever thought of doing it like your, but I did start making a different version with a nod or two to Battlestar Galactica but with a smooth skin, mostly, and a low slung meanacing look.  I just never came up with markings for it.

Thanks.

The BSG version is a great notion---I can see the shape being suggestive of that.

I've got another one in the stash, trying to figure out what sort of exotic bash to do with it. Have to see what kind of 'spare parts' I can rustle up for it.

Love that design concept, way cool! Also the fighters---are they your own scratchbuilds, or some kind of aftermarket pieces? Either way, they are a neat touch.

What sort of markings had you envisioned, or hadn't you gotten there yet?

Sorry I can't answer your question about your camera---I also suffer from being less 'smart' than my phone, though I have managed to figure how to upload from my digital camera to photobucket...just barely.

Thanks.  I scratch built the fighters years ago, long before the series remake.  I took ideas from the X-Wing fighter for the canopy and the major idea from the original Battlestar series.  The flat sides would make the compartment storage work better to save space.  The main landing would extend from the bottom of the wings.  There is a primary weapon mounted under each wing with a small torpedo launcher to the rear for emergengies.  The fighter version has a padded F-104 seat I found but the recce has a completely scratchbuilt seat with an overhead scanner built in.  They use a joy stick system with handles mounted on both sides of the seats like the flying sub and the booster packs could be used for extra thrust or jettisoned like mines behind the craft.

I'm going to have to build a better version some day.  wishful thinking.

Those are really neat Ikar, thanks for sharing them with us!

There is a PhotoBucket app that once installed on your phone you can just poke an icon and it will automatically upload the photo to the site. I have the Android version but I assume there's an Iphone version that works pretty much the same.

Thanks, I'll look for it tomorrow.  I take it it'll be in the APPS store.
