Space Battleship Yamato Availability?
Posted by rodc on Thursday, January 26, 2017 5:26 PM

Folks,

Been trying to track down a Bandai 1/500 Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Series (#862303) and the expansion kit for it (#901361).  Can't find that particular kit anywhere in Canada and shipping from the States (along with the conversion on the dollar) makes it pretty expensive.  A couple of stores in Japan has both backordered at a reasonable price but shipping is a killer.

Anyone know of a good seller preferably in Canada carrying these kits?  American sellers would also be considered if I can get some reasonable shipping costs.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried amazon. They have some $123-136 dollars. I don't know what they are supposed to cost, but the shipping is free.

Sorry, all I have is the original kit from the 70s/80s and the Andromeda.  I have never even seen a newer kit.  For that price it better be pretty good.

I have both those kits and the limited PE kit to go with them. Hobby Link Japan has them on backorder: $96.34 CDN for Yamato, $29.49 CDN for the expansion kit. Shipping is generally pretty cheap, though keep in mind it's a big kit. Backorder usually means they can still get them in so place an order and see what happens. Worse case scenario they'll let you know if it's no longer available and no cost to you. You won't be charged anything until it ships. The PE kit was only available to Bandai Club members or some such. I got it from a modeling buddy who lives in Japan, but the main kit and expansion kit I bought through Hobby Link Japan.

Hobby Link Japan (HLJ.com) is usually the cheapest game in town when it comes to these kits, though you may find something cheaper on ebay.

Hope this helps.

Thanks iSteve.  I am leaning towards HobbyLink for the kit but am a little weary about the shipping given the size of the box.  eBay has not given anything but I did find something on Amazon for $120 shipping included but cannot tell if it is the exact kit I am looking for since that detailed information is missing.

What's your thought on the kit?  Is it worth the cash?  I've seen it partially belt and thought it looked amazing.

Hi Rod,

I'm no Yamato 2199 expert, but have watched the series several times, including "Odyssey of the Celestial Ark." Of the Yamato kits available at this scale (or any scale, in my opinion), this is the one to get. Detail is amazing, considering the source is an animated subject, right down to the fighters. I've seen some builds done in such detail, you'd swear this was once an actual battleship.

It's also engineered to be lit with at least the main engine accepting Bandai's LED light sources (sold seperately), though you can certainly create your own means of illumination.

I've not seen anything on Amazon.ca that comes close to the HLJ price; Amazon.com would be in US dollars so consider the exchange. HLJ's lowest shipping price is $55.39 CDN so about $150 CDN shipped just for Yamato and not the upgrade kit. Ebay used to have some deals, but since the intial release, prices have soared. Obviously if you have someone in Japan who can grab one for you, that might be the cheapest route. Like I mentioned before, you have nothing to lose by trying HLJ as there is no cost to you until it's available for shipping.

That said, the 1/1000 version is a very nice kit and is 1/3 the price (again, through HLJ), and there are more ships available at that scale if you want to go for several capital ships. The 1/72 fighters are also very nice, as is the 1/12 Analyzer kit.

Thanks for this info Steve.  I don't know the first thing about the Space Yamato stuff having never seen any of it on TV but I did see the partially built kit at a little model shop in St. Pete's Beach (Model Citizen Hobbies) that the owner was building and fell in love with it.

The photos in the link are absolutely amazing!  What a fantastic job on the build.  $150 is kind of more than I wanted to pay but I guess that's the going rate!

All the best.

Steve,

I am still not 100% sure of the Bandai kit # that you showed in the link in your previous post of the built Yamato.  Given the cost and time related to get a kit from Japan, I want to make sure I order the correct one!  Can you confirm the kit number for me if not too much trouble?

Thanks,

Hi Rod,

The HLJ kit # is BAN986230. The number on my kit box says 0186230.

I just found a couple of other Japanese sites that have this kit available for pre-order with a March 2017 release date, so you might consider waiting until the re-release to see if you can find a better price. Some of the pre-order prices look good. Amiami.com has a better price than HLJ, though I don't know what shipping would be.

Google "Bandai Yamato 186230" and you should find some good price comparisons.

Hope this helped!

Thanks Stephen,

That is exactly what I was looking for - the confirmation of the kit number.  As I said, not being familiar with the whole space battleship Yamato stuff, I was quite confused over which kit was what.

Thanks for all the info and for the website suggestions.

Fingers crossed!

Hobby Search is another site I go to for Japanese models. They don't have this kit in stock but you can pre-order for the March re-release (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10239141). Their prices are comparable if not the same as HLJ, so I'm mainly mentioning this as another option.
