Great Scale Modeling 2004
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 29, 2004 6:52 PM
of all the contests and other scale modeling events finescale models attends there wasn't one science fiction model worthy of being shown in this yearly edition.maybe this has already been hashed out and if it has i appologize for putting you thru it again, but i just looked at this year's edition and found not one model in the sci-fi category.what's the deal?are we sci-fi modelers truly the forgotten step child hidden in a corner?i feel personally insulted.

I dont speciallize in sci fi myself although I love doing it but usually I use it when I want to do something out there and not worry about scaling and correct this or that. Just a way to vent my Imagination I guess, but also I dont believe this secter gets the respect It deserves as even stuff in the real world started out as an Idea in someones head.

I don't think we're forgotton, just a smaller sect. Personally its one of the reasons that I cancelled my subscription to FSM back in the late 90's. Lack of sci-fi. Not to mention waning sci-fi on TV and in the movies. But there are still many of us, on this forum as well as Starship Modeler, CultTV and others. I've just learned to accept it and keep doing what I like.

I've heard it be argued that we Sci-fo guys aren't quite as nice of craftsmen as the Finescale guys. But there are some truely masterful Sci-fi buildups at Wonderfest.

Whoever is trying to sell you that load, is full of crap. I don't model Sci-Fi, but I read a lot of it. I think if anything you guys stretch your imagination beyond what finescale guys do. I mean, the finescale modelers are building "real" items, just scaled to size. While a lot of what you do is all in the imagination. Hats off to all of you, really!!!! You guys should be proud of your smaller following!!! At least your genre isn't flooded with P-51 mustangs, F-14 Tomcats, Panzer tanks, and Corvettes. Maybe Star Trek, and Star Wars, but hey, who's complaining about that, right?! If you're truly unhappy, you could always publish your own sci-fi based magazine once a year of the modeling comps. I know I would buy it, because I like all types of modeling, especially when it's done well, with a lot of imagination!!!

Jimmyd30, yeah, this thread has been rehashed over and over again. I'm the one who started it last time. Here's the thread: http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?page=1&TOPIC_ID=12988 Happy reading!

P.S. Yes, Matthew Usher is I think Associate Editor of FSM. He is a great guy, loves Sci-fi, and he took billions of pics at last year's Wonderfest. We have yet to see ANY of them in print..

When i first started modeling it was all star trek or star wars, but due to lack of cash i started on WWII kits and just recently getting back into star trek kits. so when i see a magazine and I'm looking for and sci fi pictures and all i see are panther tanks, atleast I know that the "Y-Wing" was made of several armor vehicle kits, including a panther or two.

thanks ballod 2 for directing me to that thread.but i'm still not satisfied.instead of thinking along the lines of rosa parks i'd rather go with ghengis khan.build something so impressive that there is no choice but to cover it.as for my skills as a modeler and anyone who suggest the sci-fi modeler may be lacking in that area.i've competed with the best(in the amateur ranks) and beaten them all.So thats a load of .....i'm still pissed.

It's obviously been agrued by a bunch of, holier than thou, naive morons who love to dish out trash against the Sci-Fi groups that don't fit into their little clique's. Sorry, just that kind of garbage grabs my goat. Angry [:(!]

Well folks, they (the "holier than thou, naive morons who love to dish out trash against the Sci-Fi groups" ) won't change their minds until you show 'em otherwise!

As has been mentioned many a time before, put it out there, and if it's worthy, it will be respected.

Just not enough of us putting it out there yet, I'm afraid.

didnt FSM do a whole series on lighting up Star Trek kits i remember the articles on lighting up the Bird of Prey and the Defiant as well as Voyager and they had a few Sci-Fi kits in the readers gallery so if you want to see more Sci-Fi pics why not send your pictures into the magazine?

I sent in my Borg cube back in the mid 90's, and although it took quite a while they did finally print it in the Gallery. So I agree, send in your shots. There's nothing to lose.

{Hmmm... let me get on the SoapBox [soapbox]}

Nothing to lose except your time & effort. Banged Head [banghead]

Sometime last year I decided to put the "lack of submissions" fallacy to rest and submitted several articles and pics of SF kits, plus a few reviews (yes, I know FSM doesn't take model reviews from strangers, but I didn't know at the time Wink [;)]), thinking that it would prompt FSM to increase the amount of SF coverage or maybe write an article about Wonderfest, or at least print the pics FSM took of the winning Wonderfest kits last year. But it was a wasted effort IMO, as nothing made it to FSM mag, and even their own pics from WF have yet to show up on the mag. Sigh [sigh]

And yes, I've heard the argument that maybe my articles or pics were not "up to FSM standards," but quite frankly that's a humongous load of caca. Angry [:(!] I'm not an expert writter/photographer by any stretch of the imagination, but I've read/seen worse published on FSM mag before, and if it was really true that the lack of submissions was the problem, then I'd guess that at a minimum 1 of my pics would have made it.

If anything this just shows me that the bias towards anything not in the normal 3 (aircraft, armor, automobiles) is alive and well, and as prevalent as ever. Sad [:(]

{OK, I'm stepping off the soapbox now.} Whistling [:-^]

I'm very likely preaching to the choir here and it's a dead horse that's been beaten to red goo already, and I'm sorry if my post sounds "holier-than-thou" but this subject is a very sore spot for me. Black Eye [B)]

Time to go and build another Macross kit. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I guess there is nothing to do but build a mess of sci-fi kits and enjoy ourselfs. I'm disapointed in the lack of sci-fi coverage but I do believe that sci-fi modeling is on an upswing. Maybe if FSM shows more support it will help the Sci-fi segment of the hobby along.Wink [;)]

Build we must. Whether we get our sci-fi models recognized or not by fsm right now, it won't stop me. My own desire to better myself in the "skills" is what drives me. The end product is not so bad either. I like my work, maybe its not perfect or can be measured up to a real full-scale, but I know I enjoy building. I agree with Woody and J-Hulk ... keep on buildin'.

I don't know if it's just me or not but it's gotten to the point where I can't tell if a cover of fine sacle is new or old judging by the picture on the cover because they allways put the same things on them.wether they get painted differently or it's another angle of last months shot.

I think you must be talking about StevenQ's carrier. Last I hear he was getting close to finishing. I'm looking forward to seeing that one myself. Wink [;)]
