Canon or Non-Canon?
Posted by Woody on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 10:53 PM
Do any of you Star Trek fans care if a starship is canon or not? I think with it being fiction it doesn't really matter. I like to stick with ships that were on TV, in the movies, or any book. The truth is I like a lot of fan based stuff as well. I'm just getting into Star Trek modeling based on Polar Lights 1/1000 scale and wondered how many of you would scratchbuild an unofficial ship. I ask because I got a rather negative responce from someone about wanting to build a ship that they considered non-canon. Can you guess what my next Trek build is going to be?Tongue [:P]

For myself, I would keep it canon, but it doesn't matter to me what others want to do, I enjoy seeing anything Trek, especially TOS era ships, canon or not.

I build canon, I build designs from fandom, and I have a blast kitbashing my own ideas. It's all good.

I say do whatever makes you happy, Woody. After all, we're doing this because we like it. Some of the non-canon designs are better than the canon ones. Personally I just like ships that stay with the basic designs. I'm sure there are purists that don't like my carrier, but I'm not building it for them. Now let me see, what might you be building.........Smile [:)]

Whatever floats your boat Woody. While canon ships are nice. Non-canon ships do often look better. But it's all fiction anyways, so who's to say what belongs or not.

Based on previous ships who would have ever predicted they would have a ship as different looking as the "Defiant".

Who cares what others think I do this because its fun and if it doesn't exactly meet with some elses expectations tough! I started out building a star fighter on the other sight but it started looking too trekish and I restarted, but I liked where the original was going so I am going to finish it as a trek project even though its not something from one of the shows.

That's funny you should mention the "Defiant". I was surfing the other day and ran across fan drawings of the "Defiant Class" done in TOS style. Very cool!Cool [8D]

also there was a constellation class starship by the name of Defiant the Enterprises sister ship but what about the Daedelaus class starships though. Anyone interested in scratch building one of those or maybe a Saber class

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

I'm getting the parts ready for a Daedelaus even now. Wink [;)] My three big Scratchbuilds on the horizon are the Daedelaus, the DY-100 freighter "Botany Bay", and the elusive Kobyashu Maru.

Be sure to keep a photo log of the builds for "show and tell". All look like interesting scratchbuilds.

Speaking of the Saber class, a guy over at the Starship Modeler forums is about to sell a 2500th scale Saber, and then a Vorcha.

Is he producing his own kits? I'm thinking about kitting one or more of the three I mentioned. I haven't really started out side of collecting useful materials. By the way I'll be sticking with 1/1000 scale. Which reminds me I recently got a vac Oberth Class to use as reference for a scratchbuild of that ship. The Starfighter Group build has my time right now but I'm having fun with it.Wink [;)]

The ship was miss labeled as a B-10(Duh...I should have know better). Sorry to missinform you guys. The picture was in the photo album of the guy's build-ups. It was labeled as a B-10 but I think it was a carrier of some type based on a D-7. I thought it looked pretty neat.

Yeah Steven come on over, what fleet do you want? I call dibs on the federation!Tongue [:P]

Michigan is too far for me, but I'd love to play by e-mail. It will be awhile before I am ready to play again anyway. Haven't owned a copy of the game in over 10 years. Will be checking ebay probably in a few months. Oh well. But in the distant future I'd love to play by e-mail.

You don't need miniatures to play. The game comes with counters. You can still buy the game and miniatures brand new at the Starfleet store. Email play sounds fun because I won't live in MI for another year! Wink [;)]

Star Trek has been out with enough series that there is a whole sudo science.

I have seen plenty of designs that people thought were cool looking but would not work using star trek science.

But no one is stopping you from coming up with your own ideas. Look at the Akira-prise.

Also look at Wolf 359. STNG pull out all their junk models to make their battlefield.

Okay Woody, when I'm ready to play I'll make a post in this forum trolling for e-mail opponents. It might be best to use something like Cyberboard because you can do your' dice rolls via computer with no chance to cheat (unless you reprogram the thing like James Kirk would doBig Smile [:D] (I don't know much about programming)). Thanks for pointing me to Starfleet store.
