Lighting FX For 1:350 Klingon D-7 Battlecruiser
Posted by pittsfieldpete on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 7:24 AM

Hello:

I recently purchased a 1:350 short-run resin kit of a Star Trek original series Klingon D-7. When completed, the model will be about 24” long & is supposed to match all of the details featured on the original TV series D-7 filming miniature

I’d like to add lighting & engine FX to the D-7, but I can’t seem to locate any reliable web resources that show navigation light locations & colors, window locations, shapes & sizes, etc. I also need LED & resistor data for these lights, plus engine FX LEDs, resistors, etc.

I realize I’m asking for a lot, but if anyone who reads this can point me in the right direction I’d greatly appreciate it so I can start buying component, wiring, switches, etc.Just a thought. I also have Polar Lights’ 1:350 K‘T’inga & lighting kit. Is there any possibility that a K’T’inga lighting kit could be adapted for use in the D-7?

I’d appreciate any ideas or suggestions other classic Star Trek modelers can offer.

Thanks,

Pete

I don't think there will be much difference in the windows from the original series and the movie version, except for the command dome.  There was not much in the way of windos for the series version except around the forward buldge, and it had no engine lighting or lighting in the bow for the torpedeo launcher, like seen in the movie.  I think it the series and the original model it looked like a deflector or sensor array.

Was the TV prop even lit?  But, using the movie version to locate windows, lights, etc would be logical.  IIRC, the TV prop didn’t even have the impulse engines that are so prominent on the movie version.

Barring any canon references, the Polar Lights K’tinga instructions for the lighting kit could be used as a guide.

Oh, and I think the 1/500 Revell Germany D-7 was designed for lighting, so you could look to it for inspiration.

Best of luck on your project, and please post progress pics!

I don't think the original TV prop was lit either.

I'd go with the movie version too if you want to light her, should be able to elimanate some of the more complex stuff.
