Star Trek "The Cage" laser
Posted by mach71 on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 7:34 PM

I dug this out today to work on between other projects.

It's a resin kit missing the barrel and a metal barrel had no body.

I'll need to source a metal or plastic tube to mount the barrel to the body.

The resin parts are kind rough, it's a true "garage" kit

The metal parts were professionally turned and a very high quality.

So far all I have done is sort the parts and figure out whats getting used and done some sanding and filling of pin holes. There are lots of them!

This will be a long term project

"The Menagerie" kind of a remake of "The Cage", my favorite episode, Capt. Christopher Pike was awesome.

Lol, just watched 'The Mantrap' the other night where Professor Crater had one of these!

Very cool, hope you're going to post more as you get her built.

Loved "The cage".

There is a Photo of the "Hero" gun that shows a difference to your assembly.

Those "turned" metal parts cry out for nice bright LEDs in the barrels.

Good project.  I'll stay tuned to this channel. Even if it's a 5-year Trek.

The episode where the Enterprise loses power and Yeoman Rand heats some coffee using a phasor set to 'heat' comes to mind. Since this is a laser not sure if it wouldn't just burn a hole in the pot though...

I found a plumbing "T" that works.

I just cut off a section.

More pin hole filling also.

I suppose I should light this, but I'm not sure.

She boiled my coffee back in the day!

The 1st setback. All the putty I used filling the pin holes wont adhear to the resin. I've never seen this before. Back to baking soda and thin CA.

I hope my thin CA is still good.

The baking soda/CA is working. Most of the big holes are filled. I had to reshape one end of the trigger box.

I hit it with some grey primer yesterday and hundreds of tiny pin holes showed up!

Boy this casting is rough!

I broke out the red filler/primer and put a thin coat on last night. This morning I hit it with a thick coat. I hope this helps.

I met Whitney at a con back in the early '90s - as charming and sweet a lady as she was beautiful...

My Dad "stood" next to Walter Cronkite in a hotel men's room in the 1940's.  (He was always quite proud of this accomplishment.)

Lots more filling and sanding...

The pin holes just won't go away! So off to the auto parts store for some heavy scratch filling primer. 3 coats and sanding later Things were just about good.

I put 3 coats of black on. Then painted the adaptor tube gold. Thats where I am now.

Next I'll work on the trigger.

Looks good!!!

Still amazes me that a lot of the fan made stuff like this looks better than the actual TV props.

No kidding. She is one of the few blondes I care much for. I'm usually a brunette man. Her, Elizabeth Montgomery, and Barbara Eden. Ironically I didn't care for either of them when they played their evil brunette sisters. Now Dawn Wells, she can bake me coconut cream pies until the cows come home! Nice work by the way lol.

Lol, I'm not much for blondes either but Whitney had an amazing pair of legs. Montgomery and Eden were both pretty but Dawn Wells- oh yeah she was a total knockout...

Personally my opinion the uglest woman on Trek- Data in drag as the saloon gal in the ST:TNG episode where Worf was running the Western holodeck simulation. Brent Spiner- you're a pretty cool guy but you're one butt ugly woman...

Blondes, brunette, red heads, It's all good. As long as the collars and cuffs match.

Anyway

I had to rework the trigger a bit, the slot was all wrong and the trigger was solid.

A look at the screen used Jein laser shows the trigger is "hook" shaped.

My dremel made quick work of the resin.

But, as you can see there is still some imperfections in the body. I swear that this is the last time I rework it.

So out came the brush on primer. Another sanding.

I put another coat of black on it, it's drying now.

Like number 1 did!

All the big parts are together.

The kit I built was supposedly molded off one of the screen used props, I suspect the Greg Jein.

Here it is next to the old Playmate toy.

The old Playmates is actually very close.

Thanks!

I just have to glue in the 3 clear emitters and figure out a sight.

Probably some clear plastic with painted or taped edges.

Sight? What sight.  Just follow the bean till it's on target.

Nice work Captain.  Real nice work especially on that "Holy" Handle.
