Bandai 1/72 TIE Striker Build...
Posted by fotofrank on Sunday, December 8, 2019 1:07 PM

Picked up a TIE Striker kit yesterday from the LHS. Going to give it my usual "what-if" treatment. I was going for the B-Wing but the kit was kinda pricey so I opted for the Striker instead. This kit is going to build up pretty neat. I've already finished the pilot and flight deck.

 .

The pilot and flight deck are molded in black so painting commenced. The pilot's flight suit is khaki. His oxygen mask and hoses are grey and his chest pack is yellow. It's hard to tell but his goggles are clear green. All these colors are Model Master Acrylic. The flight deck and seat are Tamiya RLM Grey. With that, I think you can tell what direction I am going for this build.

OK, the pilot is where he's supposed to be, it's just that you can barely see him. He sits a little more than a half inch from the wind screen. When the clear parts are attached the pilot will pretty much disappear from view. That's OK because I'll know he's in there doing his job. I ordered a paint mask from Green Strawberry so I'll be able to paint the Striker just like I paint airplanes. When the paint mask arrives next week I'll paint the pilot pod then the wings after that. I have a really cool scheme for this model that I think y'all will really like.

Subscribed.  Those colors so far are not expected.

Gamera

That looks cool Frank, looking forward to seeing where you take her.

Thanks, Gamera. I'm kinda waiting right now for the paint mask for the clear parts to get here. These Bandai kits, you build a little and you paint a little. While I'm waiting for the mask I can paint the wings though. Probably tomorrow.

Well, it's been rainy and cool all week so no painting has happened. Looks like the first sunshine will be Sunday. I hope so. Sure would be nice to shoot some primer on this Striker.

So the canopy mask has been applied. Applying this mask was more difficult than applying an Eduard mask since the mask color is a transparent green rather than a opaque khaki color. Got every thing in place though. The sun is finally shining this morning so I may be able to shoot some primer later.

Oh gosh the masking, my most hated part of building. Looks like you've got it done though!

An update on the TIE Striker. I started shooting color today. This first color on the underside is MM Hellblau RLM 78 enamel. The underside of the wings(?) is also RLM 78. Since it's enamel, I'll let the paint cure for a couple of days before I mask for the second color on the topside. Y'all can probably tell where I'm going with this build now.

It's Christmas day and the weather is finally warm and sunny -- Christmas-y for us Floridans. So, It's out to the patio for some painting. First up is the TIE Striker: a made-up splinter camouflage for the 'wings."

Ohhhhh very cool! Looking forward to more!

And heck it's running around 70F here in Virginia- it must be short sleeve weather down there!

Well, this morning we finally have some good weather: clear skies, cool temps, and low humidity. So it's out on the patio to paint. I shot clear coat on the TIE Striker. I use Tamiya Gloss Clear thinned 1/1, then mist it on to seal the paint. We'll be gone for a couple of days so the clear coat will have time to sure. When we get back, I'll do some decaling and some more assembly. I should wrap this thing up in a week or ten days. Then on to the next project.

 .

How do you like the made up splinter camouflage?
