Star Destroyer Surface Painting Technique?

Hi, I am working on a Bandai 1/5000 Star Destroyer. The base grey coat is down and I also masked to paint some of the panels darker grey. Now I'm at an impasse. Normally my next step would be to apply a wash for the panel lines but don't think that would give the right look.

How would I go about achieving the multi-shade, smoothly mixed look from the movie model:

I feel if I just start airbrushing it will just look splotchy. Anyone know how to do the surface like the movie one?

Thanks!

i'm guessing masks of various sized rectangles that you paint in different shades of grey. i'm facing the same dilemma painting my Blakes 7 liberator.
