New MPC Space 1999 Commlock/Stun Gun kit
Posted by mach71 on Monday, November 1, 2021 12:37 PM

The postman just dropped this off! I've been waiting for an injection molded

kit since 1975!

Initial impressions are good! The size looks good, as does the detail and engineering.

It looks like parts are supplied for season 1 and 2

It's not too complicated and looks like it will build into some nice props!

The parts are washed for painting.

R2 molded the commlock in a medium grey and the Stun Gun in a light grey.

Niether is the correct color for the prop, but I'll be painting them.

Cool!  Something you don't see every day - in fact I've never seen that kit.

Thanks,

John

Nice..

These look like prime candidates for some internal lighting/sound features.

Cool, they'll look great in your prop collection Mach71!!

I agree with Phil- they'd look great with some lights in there!

Been re-watching the series so it's fresh in mind. Big Smile

Box art indicates they put some serious effort into them.

Looking foward to watching the build progress!

Sorry,

I forgot to update this thread.

I finished these today, All that I need to do is clear coat them.

I decided to build the Stun Gun that Monty Python's Terry Jones drops in his cameo on Breakaway, When he comes to stun Collins at area 2.

It's unique in that it has a flat top and only 2 colored rectangle on the handle. Probably one of the 1st props built.

I had issues with priming and painting, even though I washed everything, the paint did not want to stick. After much priming and sanding I got accaptable coverage, not great.

Finished:

As is to be expected, I just saw that the lighting kits for both kits are now available.  This morning I got a update from Monsters in Motion and it had them on the bottom of the e-mail.

Now I may have to go find the models.  They would look good sitting next to my Galactica laser and S.T. Enterprise pistols.

The models are usually available at culttvman.com

Cult does have them in stock along with a set of paint masks.

I don't see the lighting kit yet on Cult's site.

Looks like the cost to buy two different light kits, one for each of the models, would be about $100, not to mention the aggravation of soldering tiny wires to tiny circuit boards.

I think I'll pass, thank you.

Weird about them not wanting to take paint- but the results look fantastic! Love those even without the lighting.

Your and Jim Kirk's models probably look better than the props from the show considering they were probably tossed around and dinged up by the actors and prop guys.

I was highly disappointed when I received this kit.  Cheap, cheap, cheap!

Thin plastic, no detailing, few parts, lousy instructions.  I think it is barely worth about half of the asking price.

Sorry you feel that way.

I did post photo's of the the entire kit, all the parts and the instructions.

Build it, I'm guessing you will like the results.

Mach71,

Yes, thank you for the good photo post.  I bought the kit before you posted that, so I had no preview to go on.

You did a great job, and yes, I will build them...  I see this as an opportunity to practice painting metallic finishes.

If you had problems with how the paint applied it sure doesn't show in the final product.  They turned out fantastic!

I may have to pick up a set to complement the Hawk I am currently working on.

Thanks!

The paint is acceptable, but far from perfect.

I have that Hawk kit also, I should build it to compair it to the old Airfix Hawks.

I have turned aluminium motors to use on my build.

How will you paint yours? I would love to see a build thread on it.

I thought I would paint it as filmed.  There are things I like about the preproduction model, but I think the orange helps to more immediately call out the differences to the Eagle.

Sure I'll get a thread going on it.  Yes It's in the earliest stage so it's a good time for it.
