Original MPC Falcon with Mods!
Posted by Jim Kirk on Friday, June 30, 2023 9:39 AM

I thought I had thrown this in the trash long ago, but the recent posts about the rerelease of this kit with corrections had me check my storage area.
My modified MPC original issue 1/87 Star Wars Millennium Falcon.
What I did…
Completely scratch built cockpit and cockpit tube.
“Cool shade” added around cockpit tube and rear exhaust vents.
Airbrushed totally with Floquil paints
Side panels lowered and replaced with resin parts.
Detailed docking rings.

This looks awesome! I still have my circa 1984 model from Return of the Jedi.

Amazing build! I'm looking to add a Falcon to my model shelf and after looking around it seems that the MPC is a solid option. Would you agree to that?

Also if I could toss a few questions at you; Did you use any after-market products/photoetch?

Any tips that you would suggest for a Falcon build? Thanks in advance.

It's great to see older Star Wars kits being built!  YesYes

So what exactly does Kool Shade look like?  I have read it was the panel texturing on the TIEs, first Vader's then the standard fighter's.  It would seem a sun shade would look more like the standard TIE's panel texturing.

So does anyone know where Vader's TIE panel surface came from?

Very nicely done. I too have the ROJ kit in the stash. I know the new release has the side thinned to the more correct look, but I was unaware that someone made a resin set. Can you let me know where you got the resin set? Great job. Bow Down

I don't know if I would recommend the old MPC kit. It is 1979 vintage and even then, I did not think it was a good quality kit. As a child, the "new" sci-fi kits like the MPC X-Wing, Darth Vader TIE figher, and Falcon were not even the same quality as the Monogram Colonial Viper, Cylon Raider, Buck Rodgers starfighter and Dracoian Marauder.

Back in the 1990s, I lucked upon the original lighted MPC Falcon unbuilt. I already had/still have my original Return of the Jedi version of the Falcon (lights removed) from 1984 or 85.

I bought Falcon Models "guts on the outside" sidewalls from Jack Smith and other items to make this a more accurate kit back in the 1990s.

I also have a Revell of Germany version from around 2008. I think it is a much better model kit albeit quite a bit smaller. I always kick myself because I didn't buy the Fine Molds one when I had a chance to do so in 2006.

I opted for both the Jengo Fett and Boba Fett versions of Slave 1 (Boba's came with a white metal Han Solo frozen in carbonite) instead.
