Maybe I'm generous with praise but you did a great job on them!

Getting a one colour paint scheme look good is one of the hardest thing to do!

Hope you post the Imperial officers, the one you posted before turned out really well.

Gamera

Oh wow those look cool!

I'm going to check out that article. Sounds useful and a lot better than trying to paint every tiny little wrinkle and fold a slightly lighter shade. Did some Soviet tankers in the all black uniforms a month ago and just gave up, painted the uniforms dark grey and gave them a heavy black wash- looks good enough for me...

Gamera, you are a very generous person with praise.   Keep it coming!  Big Smile

That glazing method really makes dealing with the shadows and highlights a ton easier.  I really only had to pay attention to two things.  Not making the base coat so thinck that it covered zenithal highlights.  Follow by mixing and applying highlights.  That was pretty much it.

I think I made it more complicated than needed, but even then it was still easy to do and the end product was more than satisfactory.  I've got a couple more Imperial officers that I am thinking of trying this one.

Final Product shots!

I decided the cloaks were still to glossy so used a very diluted clear matte and brushed on several coats.  I think it toned the sheen down just about right.

Overall I would say that the technique could speed up the process of painting lots of similar figures.  It's not the most refined look but the shadows and highlights give it more life than just solid blocks of color would have.

Definitely worth a try.  Maybe next atttempt will be with a figure that has more than 1 color.  ;)

When waiting on various stages of the Robotech Missile Phalanx Destroid to cure or dry I've been working on these minis.

primed

The photos is after they've been primed with Vallejo black primer.  I decided to try out the method suggested in the Snapshot Finescale posted about painting miniatures.

I'll be honest and say I didn't follow it exactly so the look of the final product is on me more than the method.  I'll probably give it another try following it more closely but for now this is what I did.

After priming black the next step was the zenithal highlights.

zenithal

My first attempt at glazing covered all the shadows so the first one was stripped back to primer.

returntobeginnings

For the next go around I tried two different mixes.  The one in the middle was done using the recommeded ratio of paint, glaze meidum, and water.  It came out a heavier than expected so the flanking ones were painted after thinning with additional water.  They turned out more like I expected.

glazedover

They were still darker than I liked so I went over them a couple more times with the glaze but now I'd lost more of the shadow than I liked.

toomuch

But I liked the saturation of the color and decided to hit them with a gloss coat and then do some washes with a dark grey to bring back the shadows.

glossy

oddly enough that hid the shadows even more, but I was undaunted by it.  Time to hit them with the wash and then smack them with a matte clear coat afterwards.

washedmatte

Looking better.  Next up was highlights.  Took the original red and started adding white to it.  Then proceeded to drybrush it on to all of the highest parts.

highlights

Added more white to it and then dry brushed the topmost parts of them.

Next up was brush painting the cloaks with Satin clear coat and the helmets with gloss. Unfortunately haven't been able to get a decent picture of them at this stage.

movingalong

Not quite done with them.  Still need to paint their staves, visors and bases.  Will post final pics once thats done.
