HORROR OF HORRORS!!!!!
Posted by cplchilly on Thursday, June 10, 2004 2:25 PM
I go to MiniCon 04 in 2 days and thought well just check everything over and clean them up so I dont have to rush. So I decide to look over the star fighter first and then decide to wipe it down with a acohol wipe to take any dust and fingerprints off then I put it off to the side. A couple of minutes later the finish whited out as the wipe took off the dulcoat (and left a powdered donut coat) After totally freaking out forn 5 minutes I wiped it down with warm water and let it dry which produced no change. Finally I decide to take a chance and reshhot the dullcoat and stress for about a half an hour. That fixed but what a close call, I was thinking about that guy that dropped his lamp on his tank and melted the back of the hull. I've decided at this point if the other ones need more than a light dusting I dont care. [xx(

Is there a reason why you chose to use an alcohol wipe instead of a soft fat paintbrush to remove the dust?

Good question. What were you thinking??

Anyway, I'm glad to hear it worked out okay. Close call, Cplchilly!

I didnt think it would affect the finish and it evaporates, I just didnt know it would evaporate the dull coat............lesson learned. Now if you guys didnt think I could do 2 stupid things in one day get a load of this, I decided that the antena wire on the 1/72 P-47 wasnt fine enough so I took it off and candle stretched a finer one. Problem #1 dont use super glue to install them on 1/72 aircraft. This was the nicest decal job I have ever done on anything, problem is super glue aint to particular about what it sticks to. By the time I got my finger unstuck from the verticle stabilizer it had matching yellow and black checkers too. So I say to my self &%$^##)@&&^%@, then I decide well its only three or four checks Ill just paint cause I had to touch them to get rid of the borders so I can fix this. Problem # 2 low tack masking tape isnt as low tack as I thought, 2nd chorus $#@*^#%#$$. Now most of the decal is gone on the verticle stabilizer (starboard side) and most of the starboard horizontal stabilizers is gone. I am now going to leave well enough alone and leave it as a lesson for the future. I was never much of a winger before this project but this one taught me a lot and it was fun to, so I am looking forward to the next one. I will try to put this one in my album eventually for all to see.

you know cplchilly i think you forgot to cover the whole model with Future that would keep the low tack tape from stealing you decals.

Oh and a update for Mini Con 04 is in order. As is they didnt have sci fi catagory just a misc one and there was a ton of stuff in that. They ended up creating a seperate catagory for the motor cycles as there were so many in it but not sci fi which had as many if not more (I believe more) entries in it. Suffice it to say that my star fighter didnt place but there was a lot of nice entries though, but I did take third in figures (99 mm and under) my oldest son took 3rd in 1/72 armour and my youngest son too 2nd in juniors so I was quite happy . This was by far the best and biggest and best show I have ever been to and I plan on going again next year. We also made our money back on the raffle table and let me tell you what there were a lot of kits up there and I think pretty much everyone went home with something.

And I thought that only we (Continental Europeans) had this problem, I even made a phonecall to Johnson Brussels where a friendly (but unfortunately not to smart) lady told me that this product hasn't been made for at least 10 years. (Probably the time she works there)
