Star Trek Scratchbuild Penguin Progress
Posted by Buddho on Sunday, August 15, 2004 4:17 PM
Here is the start of my second ST scratchbuild project designed by Masao Okasaki. This is the block form before contouring and shaping. I used 1/8" dia. roll pins to locate the blocks together. I will shape each piece separately before bonding.

Dan, You are a lean , mean, modeling machine! Big Smile [:D] Masao is going to love it.
Are you familiar with his Avenger Class destroyer? I'm really wanting to build one of those. Check them out over at the Starfleet Museum and let me know what you think. Wink [;)]

Groovy! Dan if you stopped right now and stood it on it's tail on a nice polished hard wood base, you'd have a beautiful work of art! I can't wait to see it painted. I really love that dorsal shot. Sleek and deadly looking like a killer whale.Cool [8D]

Dan,

I have a draw full of ST part that I've been wanting to built with, but i can never come up with a design that hasn't already been thought of. This is really thinking outside the box. Nicely done son, nicely done.

Dan,

What is it made of, plastic, balsa, some new aged alien polymer?

Dan,

I have been watching your progess and have to say wow and fantastic. I was wondering how did you get such a smooth flowing wings and fuselage. Did you use sand paper on the foam or did you mostly use a hot wire cutter? Curious to know how it went from block to rounded edges and looking very even. The prime by itself looks awesome. I can't wait to see the full painted version.

Thanks, Woody, Bat, Frank, and Snoopy!

It's made of 10 lb. density REN foam which is very dense and heavy, but good for contouring. It's also very expensive. I am fortunate enough to use scraps from work to do these models . I used sandpaper to contour with and laquer primed it with 3 coats.

Updated photos: I scribed in panel lines, hatches, etc.

Dan, that stuff looks like it scribes great. You're making excellent progress. Are you going to make a Blue Meanie torpedo to sit next to the finished model?

Amazing work, Dan.

What would you guys (in the US, please) recommend for a good epoxy the is sandible. I'm having problems with that for my build.

Man, this is looking great!!! Those panel lines really make the surface come alive.

I remember we discussed this by email, but seeing how you're getting close to the end I am getting excited! Have you decided how you're going to mount this bird? Are you going to go with that missile and exhaust idea or a launch cradle or a simple stick or what?

Thanks Woody, Aurora, and Masao!
Aurora, I haven't found a fast setting epoxy that sands well.
I am going to add the Blue Meanie and am figuring out a scene with it being dropped from the Penguin. I started the final colors and here is the latest:

Your work is pure magic, Dan!
You should be working in a studio special effects work shop somewhere. Big Smile [:D]

Woody..you are toooooo kind!

I worked on the base and Blue Meanie today. The base is the same foam as the ship. The missile is turned aluminum with brass fins. I carved the base to simulate craggy rocks for the backdrop. I suspended the missile and Penguin with 1/8" dia. brass rods.
What a busy day!

Actually, it is sprayed with Tamiya clear blue which gives the same effect. I am heading over to a friend's house who graciously volunteered to make the decals...so wish me good fortune!
