My son's first Gundam
Posted by Aurora-7 on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 7:35 AM
From Igor Sikorsky IPMS chapter Modelfest 2004 show in Milford, CT. He came in 2nd place. Though there were only two entries in his catagory he was still pumped in getting and award his first time out.

A 1/44 Duel Gundam from Gundam Seed. Sorry I got the image a bit blurred.

I've mentioned this show to you before,. Ms A, but you said you may not be in Connecticut by this time. From what I've seen at your site, you had a good chance at walking away with something. As a matter of fact I was hoping to see your Gundams there to give my son even more inspiration. You would have loved to have seen a 6 year old little girl there win 5 awards!

Here are some of the Sci-Fi models that were there:
http://photobucket.com/albums/v70/Aurora-7/Sikorsky04/

The show has been on every Sunday of the Columbus Day weekend at the Knights of Columbus building on Route 1 in Milford for the past several years. the show is open to everybody -members and non-members. We're not members but they seem like a nice bunch. They let me, my son and 6 year old daughter in to see the show and enter my son's Gundam in the conest for all of $5.00.

If you're still popping in and out of this forum this time next year, I'll remind you again.

There is a show that my son and I plan on going to on November 7th in South Attelboro, MA at their Knights of Columbus Hall (Baycon 2004 http://www.ipmsbaycolony.com/Baycon2004.pdf). If you go there, look for a 1/144 Blue Frame and Red Frame Gundam Astray, dueling - That'll be us!

If you can't make it to MA, the air Museam in Windsor Locks is haveing an out-of-box show on Nov 13th (http://www.neam.org/cont_about.htm). If I'm lucky, maybe Mrs. Aurora will let me do both Bow [bow]

They always have a Sci-Fi/Miscellaneous category though some years it's been a small turnout for it.

Also, in April 2005 there is another IPMS show in Chicoppee, MA. We plan to bring Gundams there as well.

I saw the sign for the Nov. 13 show when I was there last weekend.... I would love to go, but I'd need transportation...

And will it be aircraft only?

No, they have room for everything. Though I'm not sure if Sci-Fi has a catagory or if it's lumped under 'miscellaneuous'. But considering it's on vetran's day weekend and they have a lot of vet guests that piloted the type of aircraft at the museum (often placed at a table by their aircraft type, it has a very aircraft feel to it.

Not my cup of tea, but I can see some talent in there and a well deserved prize. Juniors need to be encouraged.

Well, not to be mean to A's son here, but there are seams.... SEAMS MUST DIE!!!

.... But yeah, all modelers get better with age, my old kits were seam filled and all... And I've seen better Gundams out there (not mine, but he lives in PA... close enough! lol )

Come on, Akuma. Didn't your first Gundam have some seams? I'm gonna give him some time before I start pushing for seam filling. I just want him to use some paint for the next one.

Thanks, Dj and Jcon. He's jsut turnded 12 and he's pumped for the Baycon 2004 show. I was never into Gundam but watching Gundam Seed with him on Cartoon Network on Saturday nights has gotten into a couple of kits.

I just started on my Blue Astray Gundam and he hopes to get his Red Astray in by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. We've been challenged by a poster in the Starship Modeler forum with his Zion mecha models for the Baycon show.

Well my 6 year old daughter wants to get n the act now, not to be out done by her brother. She first wanted this one: http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?BCL2159

But since it's no longer available (and too pricey if it was, she'll take the Justice Gundam (it's pink!). http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?BAN919246

Those can still be had.
But I doubt that a 6yr old would be happy assembling a FULL Resin Garage Kit(seen the price on it??), I know adults that struggle with them.

Heh, the Nobel Gundam.... There were rumors of a MG kit, but it seems to have died...

As for the Justice, I think it's more of a maroon, but nothing against painting it pink! (It's pretty darn close atleast ) Hope she has fun with it, and tell her you know of another girl who does these kits :p Might give her inspiration ^__^ (here's my only pink mech for you to show her if you like: http://www.blue-devil.net/chaosgear/CrossMirage/ Although the quality sucks... need to re-take them in the future )

you will be amazed how TV shows motivate people of any age. perhaps a few episodes of some nice Tv show might help ?

a little word of warning about the 1/144 gundam kits, they are molded in color, but not all of the parts are the correct color. painting is required to make it look like the pictures on the boxart, unlike the 1/100 gundams where you dont need paint to make it look superb. i didnt paint my alst gundam, i just did some seam cleanup and weathered it with pencil scrapings. it was a blast !

reggie,

Yup, I'm aware of the Color differences in the Gundam kits. I don't now if I should worry about the 'Astray' kits since they are from a black & white manga anyway Wink [;)] He's said he's not ready to paint yet but wants to give washes a try.

As far as TV influence goes, that's why he's willing to do the Gundam's in the first place. We have Gundam Seed playing on cable TV in the US and that's been his motivation. There's nothing on TV that interests him that has any aircraft to it. Maybe if Area 88 ever comes here that could change it. An english translated manga of Gundam Astray got him in to wanting to do a Red Frame and it interested me in the Blue Frame. We're still arguing over who will get the Gold Frame.

they sell this thing over here called a gundam marker. its basically a .4 mm sharpie marker, and its a good way to do the panel lines. it looks far too heavy, but then again, its manga so it ends up looking just fine. however, i must admit that using a marker pen isnt the same as giving the model a real wash, but hey, its fast and fun, thats what i like about building a gundam Smile [:)]

I prefer the waterbased maker for panel lines. draw the line wipe excess with a tissue.
The other line marker can be cleaned up with an eraser/rubber.

Got those from Hobby Japan.

I use Sakura brand micron pens (ocasionally an actual wash ) But they're almost the same as the Gundam Markers, and can usually be found in craft stores

The one I use I think is .20, and has lasted pretty long, too (Hell, I even use them to occasionally ink my art )
