Scratch Building Elements
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 12:41 PM
I'm currently working on a big scratchbuild sci-fi project, and was wondering if anyone had a good source of small boxes, cubes, hemispheres, etc. By small I mean around 1/2" to 1" or close to that.

I can make cubes and boxes all day from styrene and cast them, but my right angles aren't always right angles and manufactured cubes and shapes would be more accurate, I think.

I found some acrylic cubes on google, but the corners are a bit rounded, and I need them sharp.

Any source ideas?

thanks.

You might try PlastiStruct (most hobby shops stock) for some of the spheres. And another good source is Tap Plastic. They have several plexiglass shapes.

A trip to Hobby Lobby always yields interesting plastic shapes for me. Look at the bead isle for small plastic sphere shapes. They carry assorted acrylic boxes in different shapes. Christmas time is a boon for scratchbuilders. Look at all the great shapes that can be gleened from cheap plastic Christmas ornaments. Not to mention all the great miniature lights that can be had for those of you who like to light your models.

You can also try USPlastics for small half spheres.

So long as they don't need to be strictly hemispheres, but demihemispheres are ok...

Try animal eyes from http://www.craftking.com/crafthtml/animal_eyes.htm
True half-spheres, with a little puttying, can be had from Wally World or any sporting goods store that sells fishing floats.
