The Chopper
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 12:43 PM
For those looking for a way to create thousands of small plastic rectangles from strip stock, I HIGHLY recommend the Chopper (MicroMark has them). My current spaceship has several thousand 1/16" to 1/4" wide rectangles as hull detail, and the Chopper was great for getting exact lengths.

Cool, thanks for the info. Been thinking about buying one but wondered how well they worked.

You can never have too many tools.

I've always wondered about that tool. How clean is the cut? Are the corners/sides of each piece true?

The edge/cut is nice on thinner strip, but thicker strip (don't have an exact measurement here) tends to shear a bit. For thicker stuff, I still use an xacto miter box and saw.

On my ships, I don't scribe panel lines. Instead I create individual panels and pieces to give it that other-worldly look. The chopper has been indispensible for this.

Sounds nice. I'd probably be using it for the thinner stuff anyway. Thanks for the tip.

Here's a (unfortunately dust-covered) example of some of the many many pieces I used on my last scratch/kit bash. All the panel detail (little rectangles) were created with the chopper, though there are some panel lines scribed as well...

Did you ever see the Australian movie Chopper? Pretty good... and based on a true story!
