1/100 Schpeltor from The Five Star Stories
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, December 4, 2004 7:12 PM
I just recieved mine, and dunno when I'll get to it, but I want some input anyway

Here's some pics of the finished kit: http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/silicon-tribe/schpeltor.html

The red looks shiney, as does the silver.... though the rest of the kit looks flat, but I can't tell... I want to do the body in flat anyway, and the red/silver gloss.... What do you guys think?

And also, how does one deal with and paint photo etch? This kit has a few parts that are....

Thanks for any opinions ect, and expect a pic of that huge cannon to be posted once I have it pinned together..... (It's almost 20in long...... )

Nice looking kit, must have set you back quiet a few bucks.
Haven't done a 1/100 FSS resin kit yet, only 1/144. OTOH, did a few of the plastic ones.

Those kits got some fine parts and care need to be taken with assembly.
BTW, forget the CA routine you will need 2-part epoxy glue fo this sucker.

As for painting, I would add pearl colour to my white and red, this is what I will be doing with my "Mortar Headd L.E.D. Mirage with Boomerang unit" as soon as I get the soft-vinyl packback finished and decided which version I will be building. This is one of those kits you pick up, model a bit and put it away again

Here is a link to pics of a finished model of my kit(very similar paintscheme).

Can you see where the Vinyl parts are??

My suggestion would if any decals are included only use the small ones and paint the rest.

Well, if you're asking for opinions....

Gloss red
Chrome Silver (which has a semi-gloss or satin finish)
Flat white with som epearl powder added, or try a interfearance paint over the white.

But, that's just my opinion.

It's really all subjective. Straight glossy will liike nice but automotive. The best way to do it would be to have it flat and shaded.

Actually it seems to depend on the anime series.
Some like FSS, Gundam, etc like to show their robots off in their full glory so gloss paintis acceptable.

Others like Dougram, Votoms, etc prefer subdued colors or camouflage schemes.

Hero-Mecha and personalised robots tend to be colorful and shiny, no matter what you do to a FSS mecha it will standout simply due to it's size.

I KNOW where they are :p

As for this kit, only set me back $78....

And also, is the epoxy glue at the hardware isle good to use? (I was going to buy some, but they were out at the Wal-Mart I work at... )

And thanks for the opinions guys ^__^

You build the same kit?
Horrible joint between the flame launcher and the Boomerang unit ain't it?

Not bad. Most of the 1/100 FSS kits I seen tend to be about twice that.

I use the standard 2 part epoxy glue from the hardware store, got a selection of different setting times(2 min, 5 min & 10 min)

I have yet to own one, I just know the backpack is vinyl and all.... It's a nice kit, though, but I'd probably go for a LED without it

Actually the kit has 2 backpacks:
1) Flame launcher(all plastic)
2) Boomerang Unit(Vinyl with some plastic parts).

Apart from the 2 joints there are no problems with the kit, otoh, you can buy both those seperate and later upgrade your LED Mirage.

Haven't so far considered going for the resin version of it.

The Volks kit is super sweet. The little wings fold up and everything!

As they do on the Wave kit(those are plastic parts). Big Smile [:D]
On the current kit i am doing the gun in the "shortened" position, still plenty long enough.
Really would like to build one of those Volks Kits, but they are a bit beyond what I want to spend on such a kit.

The wings on the wave kit wings are slighly possable. I mean the whole assembly folds up and closes up like a beattle does with it's wings. The wave kit is a great kit. But the Volks one it many times better.

Volks is the KING of Resin kits in Japan, that's why they want 23.800Yen (215USD) for the Boomerang upgrade add that to the robot kit that will also cost you another 20.000Yen(appr.) and you are paying for that quality.

Workshop cast kits are not far behind in their pricing with their 1/100 Schpeltor going for a measly 19.500Yen.

Just a note. The current re-release of Volks FSS kits is supposedly thier last hurrah in the "garage" kit industy. I was told they are dropping the license. The fact that the doll items they produce are at a higher profit margine and the recast industry of Hong Kong is cutting into thier sales are the supposed reasons.

Well I guess I can start to pay off some bills now.

Yeah, they are one of the last companies to leave the resin kit scene.
I think they will still market their A-brand and X-brand kits though.
Pity I wanted to get one of their 1/8 Scopedogs before it happened.

Wave I think is still in the process of producing new kits under the Be-B label.
There are a few others that don't rely on resin kit sales for their profit that still do a few kits here and there.

The recasters in Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea and overseas have really ruined the japanese garage kit scene, it still exists but again only as an underground industry from where it started originally. In short all the kits are now sold at events and kit shows only.

Yup, same here. Might get a chance too to reduce the mountain of kits sitting at home.

all my shirts are literally "boxed" in. I can't even move them side to side to pick one out. I have to grab a shirt at random. ;) And this is with only the kits too valuable to put in the storage unit.
