Does anyone remember the two or so articles that had fotos and articles about the X wing? Looking for references and ideas re detailing especially the cockpit and R2D2.

It did end up in one of thier books on building sci-fi subjects. It also included some great pics of the studio models. I think its out of production though so you might have to dig for that one.

The December '98 issue of FSM had an article on building the AMT/Ertl X-Wing. It's a Dagobah crash-scene diorama by Dan Thompson, and in it he details the open cockpit and reworks the kit R2-D2 to pose it outside the fuselage.

It's a good place to start, I think.

Nope, look here:
http://www.starshipmodeler.com/starwars/x_frnt3-4.jpg

The upper starboard and lower port laser cannons had the "spiral" stripe, and another thing to look at is the yellow painted on the "rings" just aft of each laser cannon barrel, but only on the upper laser cannons. If you were looking at the front of the X-Wing, the # next to each "o" represents the Laser Cannon #:

1 o_____[]_____o 2
3 o--------- --------o 4

Laser #1 Has Spiral Stripes and Yellow Ring
Laser #2 Has Yellow Ring
Laser #3 Has no special markings
Laser #4 Has Spiral Stripes

Hope that makes sense.

just finished up a mostly reworked snaptight version of the x wing...what a fun project it was ! Decide to read the original screenplay, and base it off of that...came out ok !

NP Greg, I'm always happy to assist when I know a bit about the subject! I'm also prepping to build up a couple of X-Wings (one snap-tite and one MPC/ERTL Glue kit) as Wedge Antilles' whips from ANH (The snappy) and RotJ (Glue Kit). It's going to be fun, to say the least!
