Well, having read a fair bit of the series...

There is rather few info on how the ships are painted; in fact, the few comments I can remember point to an overall bare metal look.

In the SOL's case, this would be flamingo red, or possibly blueish-red, in the original, 6500m long, state. "Luckily", I can't remember any color-related comments from this time, so both box art and instructions could be taken as a possible paint job, which was simply never mentioned.

However, the Revell kit builds into the "refit" version (8000m long), which is golden (and has been shown like this on several covers); so if you want to do the kit "correctly", you'd have to paint it overall gold.

So much for canon. I'd recommend doing what you think will look good.

Well, I think the revell kits suck! and would gladly trade them off, but they are mostly started, the fit is terrible and the painting is a nightmare, but that is my own opinion

Well, it isn't a great kit, that's a fact.
I didn't buy it though. This thing is completely out of my league. I won this kit at the Dutch IPMS Nationals in the tombola. And as I had lost my modellng-itch, it was a nice twenty minutes glueing the peaces together.
It counts 28 plastic peaces if recollect correct. And as it seems, hundreds of decals. It is crudely moulded.

For the colorting: After the refitting to 8000 m: that's a novelty to me. I figure that would be just too boring. Sure it would get some washes etc, but still: completely gold...
I guess Revell didn't do all of the homework needed for this kit. Making the refit version blue red and grey.

Painting is though: the fit is that rough that painting is only possible after building. having built though, airbrushing is though as well because of the immense masking-job needed.
I'll build it slowly without much aspiration.

Well, I've been busy.
I've done some airbrushing (red and blue) and now I'm on to the grey. The majority of the hull is grey. Masking is too much work. The form is rather complex to mask, so I'm painting this by hand. By now there is approx 4 hours of grey painting involved, including the dark grey rings. It's really a tough job, tht I have to work through. Not really great modelling fun, but rather relaxing.

I've had one built for over a year and am still not ready to fill the seams etc. I've nearly completed the 3 other kits - cannot name them, well I can but I cannot be bothered going to look at the box just now, but the round ball shaped one fits really poorly. Hope the Star Wars kits fit better.

An update:

I've not had a (decent) chance in building. It won't take long before my wife'll give birth to our second. For this, much tinkering on the house was needed. My son had to get a new room for instance. Besides that too much time went in to the garden.
So, no modelling since months.... alas.

STill a development. As I was cleaning up the attic, I clumsily threw the doggybone Sol on the floor. It split in half. Bugger! It split exactly in the middel, so I've got two balls on a pedestal now.
So inspiring to get behind the modelling table again (NOT!).

In a month or so, I'll prbably pick up modelling again.

Well, I fixed the doggybone.
It's gotten a layer of future, for the decal application.
Paint job isn't even near perfect, but I'm getting fed up with this model. I just want to finish it. Not a great modellers mentality, but hey: blame me.
