Star Wars Droid Starfighter + more - completed pics
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 11:19 AM
This is my first (actually the second, but the other one is very small - see below!) completed Star Wars modelling project - a Trade Federation Droid Fighter from Episode 1.
It's not the tiny 1/48 AMT/ERTL kit, but the toy, which is 1/24 (Star Wars figure scale). Since the
"real" ship is only about 3 metres long, it's still quite a small model!

As this is such a small and simple ship, and I had no interior detail references (are there any?), I simply dismantled the toy, cleaned up all the mould lines, glued it back together and painted it (with Tamiya and Games Workshop acrylics!). The glowing "eyes" on the fuselage were created by painting Tamiya Transparent Red over an undercoat of Tamiya Chrome Silver.

Overall, I'm very pleased with how it's turned out. Despite its very humble origins it's quite an impressive model now - even if it does look ridiculously small next to an X-Wing or Jedi Starfighter in the same scale!

This will hopefully be only the first of many Star Wars ships - both kits and toy rebuilds. Whilst I'm not a huge fan of the films/movies, I've always loved the style of the ships and vehicles in the SW universe, largely due to playing the
"X-Wing" computer games series.
I'm currently building the AMT Y-Wing kit and have started work on rebuilding a toy X-Wing, which will have a complete cockpit interior as well as replacement scratchbuilt guns, landing gear and canopy.

Finally, here's a pic of my other SW ship I've completed so far. It's the Sith Infiltrator from the AMT snap-together series, and is tiny - about 2 inches long at most. The kit is pre-coloured and snap-together, but I cleaned everything up, glued it together and painted it, in a mixture of metallics and black, with a red glow effect on the windows.
The ship is placed on a Games Workshop "flying" base (for Warhammer/40K models such as jetbikes and flying creatures) to give it a flying effect.

I have the other 3 kits in the series (Republic Cruiser, Federation MTT and Lander) and will build these as well some time in the future!

You did a great job on both of those. I like the colors you picked out for the sith ship. You can do lots with the starwars kits and its good to hear they are comming out again. Here is 2 pics of star wars models i did a couple months ago.

Great job. Cool [8D]Thumbs Up [tup] It's hard to believe that started as a toy.
