Hitchhiker's Guide
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 3, 2005 2:48 PM
I saw the movie last night, and though purely lightweight, it was harmless fun, with some decent effects for a middle-budget picture.

I loved the Vogons though. So entertaining! I wonder if anyone will put out a garage kit of a Vogon. The ships weren't particularly interesting being largely geomatric in shape (round for Zaphod's ship, rectangular for the Vogons).

The wife took me to see it for my birthday. Yeah the ships could have been much more interesting externally. I did like the little red "sport" shuttle. I still don't think it was better than the British made version which I beleive was really a mini series. I know cutting up the story to fit into two hrs couldn't be avoided but it's just that the movie didn't seem to capture the "essence" of British Comedy for me...

I rather liked it

I wouldn't mind a kit of Marvin and maybe the Volgons, too

Hitchhickers kits - come on Airfix give it a go. Although plain they have a nice feel to them - form follows function.
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease.

Yeah I'd def build a Marvin with lighted eyes...of course. Did anyone notice that the original Marvin from the original British version made a cameo appearence in the the service line at the Vogon detention center?

Yep. I noticed!

And the original Arthur Dent appeared as the holographic recording telling Zaphod and crew to go away near the end of the movie.

AND (though I missed this detail) Douglas Addams himself made an appearance soon after that. One of the custom-made planets in Slartibartfast's showroom was shaped like Addams' head. Big Smile [:D]

i loved the books too that was why the movie was such a disappointment. Like I said before the Britsh version was better and it had poor special effects. But the British version is like a 4 or more hr mini-series so it fleshes out the story much better.

watch the series or buy the book, skip the movie. I know the jokes by heart and they went by too fast for me to notice them half the time. Humor is all about timing and there isn't enough time in the movie to do it right.

I hate to break this to you, but this is a mostly British version too -- yes, it's a Touchstone picture, but most of the production was done in the UK. American money, British production. Sort of like the Lord of the Rings movies are New Line Pictures, but mostly produced in NZ.

My God this movie almost replaces Solaris at the top of my "all time worst movies ever to see the light of day,Oh why, oh God why" list.

If the book was anything similar, I can't see how anyone could have read it.

My 2 cents [2c]
Oh come on the movie wasn't that bad. I confess that the singing dolphins at the beginning scared the heck out of me!

Consider that the books were written after that the BBC radio play had had a tremendous success. So the story wasn't really concieved as a novel but as a play.

It is some time that I've seen the show so I might be wrong on the following statements.

The TV shows cover only the first two books while the movie is based mainly on the first book so to me it covers the story better than the TV show.
I must admit that it really is fast paced but on the other hand it introduces characters (like Humma Kavula) that were left out in the shows.
