Warhammer 40K Land Raider progress
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 23, 2005 10:52 AM
My Land Raider (for the Warhammer 40K group build) is now well on the way to completion!
(for anyone not familiar with 40K, this is a heavy assault tank/troop transport used by the "Space Marines")

The kit has a detailed interior, which is quite visible on the completed model (the front and side hatches open, and the roof turrets/cupolas are removable) so I decided to paint it as well as I could, and also added a few extra details.

I first painted the interior with Tamiya Flat Black, then dry-brushed everything but the floor very heavily with Citadel Chainmail (a dull steel/aluminium colour). This gives a very convincing appearance of grimy, battered bare metal.

The floor was dry-brushed more lightly, with Citadel Boltgun Metal, and the engine block was drybrushed lightly with Boltgun Metal and Tin Bitz (a very dark metallic bronze) to give the appearance of oily and heat-discoloured metal.

Details were painted with various Tamiya and Citadel paints. Computer screens and lights were given a "glow" effect by first painting with Tamiya Chrome Silver then overpainting with a thickish layer of Tamiya transparent paint.

I added a few small details to the interior - weapons stowed on the side rack (near the front troop hatch) and on the troop seats; a storage box and 2 fuel cans at the back of the tank (both 40K scenery accessories); and an ammo box containing grenades and rockets (made from half a Tamiya crate and assorted spare projectiles from 40K Space Marine figures).

As you can probably tell from the dark green paint scheme visible on some parts, I'll be painting my Land Raider in the colours of the Dark Angels chapter. I'll use an overall dark green paint scheme, with a drybrush of lighter green, and Bleached Bone (off-white) on the side doors and the front inset area, plus moderate weathering.

Anyway, here are the pics:

The two parts of the main hull, awaiting assembly, and showing the interior detail.

The hull and other parts of the tank, awaiting final assembly and painting.

For those not familiar with Warhammer 40K and the Land Raider, the tank will have a sponson mount either side with twin laser cannons, plus a secondary turret with twin heavy bolters (heavy machineguns/autocannons) on the front.
Very WW1-style in both the "rhomboid" shape and the sponson weapon configuration!

Looks well done for Sci-Fi Armor. But why so many skulls?
On another note, can you tell me what the average WH armor model consist of.

The skull is one of the Imperial symbols (AFAIK) as is the double-headed eagle seen on the front of the tank. The skull in a gearwheel, seen on the engine, is the symbol of the "Adeptus Mechanicus", basically the main Imperial technology guild.

I'm not hugely keen on the more gothic and "techno-fantasy" aspects of the Warhammer 40K universe either (I'm more of a conventional sci-fi fan) but I still like the vehicle designs, particularly the Eldar and Tau. Having an interest in WW1 and WW2 armour, I also like Imperial vehicles with their weird combination of early 20th-century design and 41st-millennium technology!

Referring to your other question, most Warhammer 40K models are quite simple and easy to build, as they are mainly aimed at (a) wargamers who might have only limited modelling skills, being more interested in the gaming side of the hobby rather than building and painting the models/figures, and (b) younger modellers.
They still look good when built and often (particularly Imperial vehicles) are quite customisable with various optional weapons and stowage parts.
Some, such as the Land Raider Crusader and Eldar Fire Prism, have both metal and plastic parts.

Thanks for the information. I agree, I have seen the WH models on display a few times and once fully assembled and painted, they look great.
Although I am not really a big Sci-Fi fan, nonetheless I think that you are making awesome progress on this Land Raider. The detail is really looking sharp.

Looking great!

I am working through my Tau Hammerhead tank, which needs lots of clean up and putty. But after playing a little bit of Dawn of War, I am keen to get a Twin Las-cannon Predator tank.

cheers

Nice work so far. Can't wait to see it finished.
It gives me some reference for the immolator interior although I won't do exactly the same look.

Well... I guess chaos and skulls go well together.

It's now fully assembled and the paintwork is about 80% complete, so I hope to have some photos of the finished article on the weekend or early next week.

Not only that, you can add a lascanon to each side sponson. then it's the Predator Annihilator pattern. I built that one using an older generation kit, as the entire turret, upper hull and mounts were entirely metal. That was one heavy sucker.

Nice Job so far Drawde. I am working on a razorback (pics in the group build area). I have one of the Land Raiders also. I think my only complaint about the kits is the soft plastic. One has to be oh so careful with a knife or risk hacking it to pieces Black Eye [B)]
