Starliner peek
Posted by Woody on Saturday, June 18, 2005 11:16 PM
I thought I'd share a couple pictures of my latest project. This is a Vulcan designed Federation starliner. These are pictures of the master patterns for a 1/1000 kit. Let me know what you think.

Four, perhaps five if I make the tail piece seperate. I need to talk with the caster to see what way would be best. I'm leaning toward four. The main hull, a dorsal spine piece and two semi-annular warp rings.

Don't worry about the slump, Woody, we all have them. You're making excellent progress. I put aside the scratchbuilds myself for a while. Bought me a few Tron light cycles from the SM store, simple to clean up and paint. Got my Jem Hadar cruiser coming and gonna order a Valdore from Ravenstar. Just diversions from racking my brain over finishing a design that's only on paper.

Thanks Guys. The markings are the way the designer placed them. I doubt I'll try to get Singapore Airlines on the kit decal sheet. I was thinking about markings for a "Federation One" type ship, a starliner in the era between TMP & TNG, and perhaps a Vulcan diplomatic vessel. What do you think? Anyone have ideas for the commercial starliner? I was thinking maybe Risa registry? If anyone has CG skills and would like to take a crack at ship markings, I'd like to see them.Wink [;)]

I managed to get the semi-annular warp engines roughed out. I hope to have something photo worthy in a couple days.Wink [;)]

As I mentioned before, I can help you out with markings. There are a lot of possibilities. You can go the modern "Euro white" route, a retro cheat-line look, or something with a lot of body color.

Here's an old Pan-Am livery

These three were designs by some pro and amateur livery designers I modified by for my own ships.

These are some of my own designs:

Edited to add credits to livery designs!

Sweet! I like all these but this one is my favorite.

That's a sea serpent from an episode of the Animated Star Trek. I added a bit of alien script and some Chinese. I don't think it would be appropriate for the Vulcans, though!

I recognized the critter and I remember the episode. Although a Vulcan design, I see it in wide use amoung Federation members. I would like to see how your designs look adapted to the Vulcan starliner.

I've got Galen's original side view, so I'll trace it and work up some liveries.

Very nice design, Woody. I like how it's not the saucer-and-nacelles of the Federation designs. Much more elegant and organic...definitely a good idea for a interplanetary passenger liner or diplomatic ship. Thanks for the peek, and I'll be looking forward to any updates as they come.

Hey John, It does have an organic, almost aquatic, look to it.

Woody: I traced the schematics you sent in my drawing program. Here's a quick test shot in Vulcan Red.

Designing liveries for this ship is a bit challenging since it's not quite built like a regular airliner. The multiple windows will put "holes" in any logo or legend placed on the relatively small nose (which is also very curvy). Also, the wings can't be treated like airliner wings (i.e., ignored) because they are very thick and wide. The nacelle panels can be treated like an airliner tail, however.

Edit: Woody, what's the "actual" size of this ship?
