Warhammer 40K Land Raider - completed at last
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 1, 2005 6:51 AM
I actually finished and photographed this model, for the Warhammer 40K GB, over a month ago... but forgot/put off doing a "write-up" of the photos until today (Monday 1st August). Dead [xx(]

Anyway, this is my Warhammer 40K "Land Raider Mk.IV" tank, finally completed. The Land Raider is a heavy assault tank used by the Space Marines, which can double as an APC, carrying a full squad of troops. My model is painted in the colours of the "Dark Angels" Space Marine chapter.

The Land Raider is quite a detailed model, which has a full interior with opening doors and hatches, and a reasonable degree of customisability with different cupola types, accessories etc. It's similar in size to the average 1/35 tank, but somewhat wider and taller. The actual scale is around 1/48.

The model is painted with GW/Citadel and Tamiya paints, and is (intentionally) built "out of the box" with no customisation and additions other than a few extra interior details and a radio aerial. It is also one of the very few 40K models I have which is (or was!) a brand new kit. 99% of the others are second-hand examples, often in poor condition, bought on Ebay and at second-hand sales! I have a number of other Land Raiders amongst this lot, and will use a bit more imagination in building (or rather rebuilding!) these. One will be a Daemonhunters/Grey Knights tank, another will be a customised Crusader-style vehicle with modified armament and additional armour.

The main paint colour is Dark Angels Green (unsurprisingly), weathering was added with a dry-brush of Snot Green (ick!) on the edges and raised areas, followed by a lighter dry-brushing of Chainmail. The side panels are Bleached Bone highlighted with white. Transparent areas such as periscopes, headlights, searchlight, laser cannon muzzles, etc. are painted first with Tamiya silver then overpainted with Tamiya transparent paints when dry (with several layers in some case).
Tracks were painted with Tamiya flat black then heavily drybrushed with GW Boltgun Metal and other metallic colours. A similar technique was used on things like gun barrels and power cables, with "Tin Bitz" (a dark bronze colour) used on the engine exhausts to give a heat-discoloured appearance.

All the photo images are links, to make things easier for those with dial-up connections (like me...)

Displayed with my other Dark Angels models (giving an idea of the tank's size).- standard Marine, Deathwing Terminator, and motorbike. These are all the D.A.
troops I have at the minute, though I have plenty of other Space Marines from other chapters!

Nice build Drawde. I have one of the monsters sitting in my closet that I have yet to even start. Maybe someday. I put the dullcoat on today and no silvering to the decals so I am pleased. I have a little more weathering then should be able to post pics of the completed project. Maybe by tomorrow.

Yes. Nice one!
I really liked the interior. Wish mine looked that good. BTW: The immolator is 99% complete :)
May I suggest that you take a photo of the Land Raider next to a ruler so that others can see it's size.
Someday I'll get a Land Raider crusader. For now the stash must not grow, but it's so hard to resist...
