But meh, whatever you make, Pirates will get it and make some kinda bootleg, weather it's a good one or a bad one...

I'm sure when I get a real good job (ok, maybe I'm dreaming... a good job is non-existant for the most part ) I can afford origional kits... But right now that's just not possible...

Right now I cannot afford a 2006 Corvette. Should I get one from No Questions Asked Auto Supply for $10,000 (but with no papers)???

I work in the computer software field, and piracy is a major problem for us as well. If you cannot afford something, don't buy it. Just because somebody is willing to break the law (and even if it's legal in China, importing pirated goods to the United States is a crime) doesn't mean you ought to buy from them.

The only case I can see for this re-casting idea is the situation where the original maker is no longer in business and nobody is offering licensed copies of a given model. Even then, I'd want to see a reasonable effort for the new producer to contact the original owner and arrange a license.

In most ways China doesn't have law when it comes to this. Even the Simpsons made a crack about it. These pirates took a yaht Homer was on and said they were taking it back to Pirate Island. "Or, Hong Kong, as we call it. Arrrrrrr."

Gotcha

Never made a model of my own, so I wouldn't know...

And I do understand the copyright thing, too.... But doesn't China and such have different laws too? (There's always a way around anything after all... )

Out of all the resin kits I own, one is origional (and I scored it for about re-cast price, too ) I just like things cheap, and most anime figure kits are tough to get origionals of sadly....

I guess this is just a giant deabte for some other day...

Now, back to your regularly scedulded thread

If my mini Galactica was to get recast you will never see another model from me. So how does that make you feel? I have seen very talented people leave the industry because of it.

man,
this will open a can of worms!
ok simple version, as a professional model maker speaking from experience. If i scratchbuild a model to offer as a kit and someone who had nothing to do with the piece comes along and recasts it, why should I make the kit !. this recaster has taken my hard work and turned around remolded it and casts it, selling it for less than i can. Why! becasue he didnt have to sculpt or make the original and figure out how to make it moldable. he doesnt have any investment whatsoever in the time or monies to bring about the piece, he just remolds ( throws rtv on it) and casts it up and sells it as his, making money where ever he can
if you made something to offer to the model making community , how would you feel if someone stole your work and sold it for his or her own profit....that's what's happening here
I'm not getting into copyrights on this either, you still have proprietary rights as it's your creation, and in my case, I only do commissioned work now, so it's tottally above board.
Garage kits came about as a way of making model kits available to those that wanted certain subjects, not available to the general public

May I ask what's so wrong with re-casts? O.o If a kit isn't widely available and someone re-casts it, I'm there...

Some people can't afford origionals sadly

I'll second what Coby said. Information from folks I know and trust state he's selling several kits that are recasts of Comet Miniatures and some few other kits. However, not every thing he sells is a recast, as the majority of what he sells isn't recast from all I've been able to find. I've purchased the Cylon Tanker, Rising Star, Event Horizon and Alien refinery. They have varying degree's of quality control - problems with not terribly clean castings on two that I purchased form him, - but he has a number of small models you can't find elsewhere. The Event Horizon is pretty nice and also pretty accurate, from what I can tell. The Cylon Tanker has issues, but is fixable. The Rising Star is pretty much just a hunk of resin, tho the engine bells are somewhat salvagable. The Alien refinery is actually pretty nice, tho I don't know how accurate, overall.

The greatest measure of a man is his children and what kind of people they are.

Thanks, Cobywan. Hopefully, Serenity will be a big enough hit that somebody will do a nice (affordable!) Firefly.

Cheers!

Actually that guy does do some of his own castings. He probably paid for that pattern. But I will say the photos I have seen of that kit show it's a lousy model. You would be better off with a pretty picture of Kaylie from the show.

Ditto. Resist the urge to buy, don't support him.
