I know that I did not make it in time for the last Star Trek group build and am still working on my USS Daedalus class ship but is there another group build coming up soon? Seeing some of these progressive build photos are impressive and have inspired me not to give up. I have used some of the techniques used in the previous builds like, Woody, I used your trick of a small pilot hole in the center of a saucer section put a screw through it and used the power drill as a make shift lathe. I did it a little different, I drilled a hole just big enough for the screw type mandrel on my moto-tool and as it spun used a file to file the jagged edge in order to get a smooth circle the size I needed since I do not have a waldron punch set yet. The disk I needed is for the back of the USS Daedalus and for the back of the nacelles (see schematics on the Starfleet Museum website). It I had a digital camera I would take photos but I do not have one or know of anyone that has one.

I just do not see where the need for small range single seat fighters. I mean even the Defiant (SP, Sorry if it is wrong) had a dozen crew members and runabouts had a couple man/woman crews. I am sorry if I stepped on anyones toes or hurt their feelings. Either way, I still love the ships the Star Trek makers came up with:) I would like to see some more of the scratchbuilding of more Star Trek ships. Always an interesting subject.

Don't worry about toes over here Snoopy ( you guys got the tar and feathers ready?Wink [;)] ) Everyone has their own likes and dislikes about Star Trek. That's one of the reasons we have so many designs out there and what the franchise doesn't give us the fans can create.
I can understand where you're coming from. I mean it really doesn't make a whole lot of since that there would be much of a need for fighters given the fact that even the shuttlecraft have rather decent firepower.
It probably is more of a preference thing to some fans. I for one like the idea of small fighter craft but then I have a thing for modern jet fighters too.
The idea of a small group of fighters disabling a starship is kinda cool. I keep thinking of working up some fighter (single and two man) and some ground troop concepts that would be Federation based. In some of the older gaming concepts you could find small troop carriers and the equivalent of drop ships. The thought of Feds and some alien race duking it out, up close and personal on an other worldly landscape makes for some thought provoking mental images.

Here is a link to a really cool fan design for a Federation fighter:

Sorry! I know in there has been smaller craft. I do not play the Star Trek games so do not know about those. I just go by series and movies. I look at it that the ship like Constitution class, etc. fire at distances where by the time a armed shuttle or fighter gets there there is nothing less. Yes, DS9 used shuttles but until the Defiant came into play, that is all they had. Sorry to create controversey. They still looked nice though.

Remember also the two man craft from Nemesis. That is fighter like and there have been mentions in the novels as well. Timely post Trek is 39 today.

A lot of the starships of fandom are purely hypothetical. There have been fighters in games and the Peregrine that was at Wolf 549. In war games like "Starfleet Battles" carriers carry armed shuttles too.

Sure does look promising. I had some trouble trying to get to certain topics. I did check out the ST Carrier conversation. A question on this one Woody is in all the Star Trek shows and movies, there are really no small one man fighters except for run-about shuttles so why a carrier? Just curious. All the images yousupplied did look great though. I think a couple of them with the multiple hanger bays could actually be ambassadorial type ship for in flight convention, ect.

This forum looks promising for the Star Trek modeler.
