Granted it isn't the 1970's anymore, but, I still prefer the original series. The new one has been turned on it's head way too much for me. I'll still watch it, since it's sci-fi programming. It seems that in their quest to be different , Sci-Fi has deleted almost all the virtues extolled in the first show and made everyone a jerk. |

They're shooting for a grittier, more realistic show. While I still have fond memories of TOS BSG, it doesn't hold my up so well in my thoughts, being more camp than anything. The best episodes, to me, are those where there's some dark machinations going on, where there's some conflict between characters other than the Black & White Cylons vs Colonials. I just got the boxed set in the mail yesterday and watched "Saga of a Star World" (the pilot) and think that one of the things that makes it such a good episode is seeing things like Adama's self-doubt, Apollo questioning just how smart it is to continue to allow the civilian government to run things w/the RTF on the run, Starbuck's rogue-ish manner is a lot stronger and Sire Uri should have been left on Carillon. People die - both on the Colonies and Carillon. It's not a pleasant universe.
Later episodes are all Tea & Crumpets, with almost every one ending with a happy, fuzzy feeling between everyone. The only other "dark" episodes are "The Living Legend" when Pegasus fails to show back up - but even then it ends on a happy note - and "War of The Gods" with Count Iblis. The point being, tho, that everybody almost always gets along, everybody's almost always reasonable and they all have that perfect 70's Hair going on.
I think to say that "everyone is a jerk" on TNS BSG is a rather unfair. Quite a few of the characters are very likable: Adama as the gruff mlitary commander, Dualla is the upstanding communications NCO, Lt Gaeta is the uber-geeky and almost always affable bridge officer, Cally is usually very easy going and probably a load of fun to work with, Billy Keikaya is always looking at the positive, and others. Yes, Tigh is a drunk, Starbuck is an insubordinate brat (mostly to Tigh)and Apollo has a chip on his shoulder (that's slowly eroding, if you watch the show). Just because they're not all happy, smiling people every moment of the day and just because a few of them have the occasional bad day doesn't mean they're Jerks. You should work w/the folks I do and you'll be calling even the "jerkiest jerk" of TNS a saint. Well, maybe not, 'cause I reserve that label for Ellen Tigh (I use a different set of descriptive words for her). However, people aren't perfect and RDM is showing us those who aren't always at their best - warts and all.
The point is, a lot of the characters have got problems - just like a lot of us in real life. Ron D. Moore has created a show where he's trying to show that They Are us. Sometimes he beats us over the head with it, but most of the time it's fairly subtle, IMNSHO.

It's all good, dude. I don't have a problem with it. You didn't just rail on the show, out of hand. Not everybody is going to like every show. I appreciate that you didn't bag on it.

There are several good resin kits out there right now, with more on the way.
Sadly, tho, we'll likely never see any good plastic kits.
