Star Wars (#4/5) paint colors
Posted by mostlyjets on Sunday, October 2, 2005 12:17 AM
I've been bringing my son along slowly into modeling and now that he's 100% into Star Wars, I'm doing the ERTL X-Wing and Snowspeeder with him. (Geez, can the fit be any worse?!?). What kind of reference books or other resources are out there for color matching? I was thinking of using FS 36622 Camouflage Gray for the "not fresh from the factory" finish.

What I do in situations like this...... get a scrap peice of plastic, preferably the same color as the model, prime it (if you do) and spray different colors (aircraft gray, light ghost gray, ect) and compare to photos. I don't think that it has to be the exact shade of gray....unless your a nit-picky guy. But if your doing an X-Wing as they were in the starting years of the Alliance, I think they had that haggard, hand-me-down look to them.
LOL the fit problem...... try the Star Destroyer.......bloody nightmare......
Cheers

Thanks Gig, I'm not that anal retentive on the color. I think FS 36622 for the X-Wing will do nicely, and maybe a slightly off white for the Snowspeeder. I haven't cracked open my AT-ST yet to check for fit. Wonder how bad they can screw up a box with legs?

On my X-wing I used the Model Masters camoflauge gray, and after weathering it looks perfect. On my snow speeder I used Model masters sac bomber tan for a rouge squadron desert look.
I am a man, But I can change. If I have to....I guess...

I just used Model Masters light gray for my X-wing. I am happy with it as a base color. I tried light gull gray first, but it was too brown for me prior to tryig to weather it.

Having built several of these kits the best thing I could say to do without a doubt is pick something you like and go with it. Have fun and enjoy your build and the time you get with your son in the hobby.

I would have thought they were white personaly. I agree with the coment about the fit of the Star Destroyers. Just have to look at the box art (aspecily the newer box art) What colour do you pain the Star Destroyer? People always paint them grey as far as i know they are white also. I've read in some of the novels they refer to the colour as Star Destoyer white.

ilikespagetti, I concur. I like the idea of the tan Snowspeeder! After all, who said it's just for snow! Maybe even an X-Wing Flight Demonstration Team!

I did Anakin's Pod Racer from E1 a few years back - great fun to detail the engines etc...you could use just about every metalizer and buffing compound out there and still have tons to weather after! The pod itself was bare metal with his blue racing paint. Pretty straight forward.

I've never seen any reference to exact colors of the craft in the movies...and I would expect that a decent match can be had by guessing.
