Is there a better way to apply Gundam stickers?
Posted by A Mejias on Monday, October 10, 2005 9:29 AM
Bandai's www.GundamOfficial.com had a forum that was closed last week. It's a real shame because it was a great resource! Sad [:(]

A few posts there mentioned that there is a technique for applying the Gundam stickers that come with the kits so that they lay flat with no edge effects. Has anyone heard of this? Is there a link to the technique?Question [?]

I know Bandai started making water slide decals, but they are only for some of the Master Grade kits not the Perfect Grade or others.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Don't know how to smooth out the edge of the stickers unless you trim them really close.

For placement I drop a little bit of Windex (window cleaner) on the model to help float the sticker. It cleans the surface and helps the stickers stick better.

I was going to suggest the Models4U store for decals (most awsome decals) but they're temporarily closed. You can try Starship Modeler for some. http://www.starshipmodeler.com/cfstore/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=43

I used google's advanced search feature and put gundamofficial.com in the domain section. I put sticker in the regular seeach section. After I searched, I read everything through google's cache of the page. Here's what I gleaned:

1) The first thing you want to do is to trim the sticker so that there's no excess clear. Just the colour portion.
2) Then apply the sticker and gently rub it down very thoroughly.
3) Take a hair drying and heat the sticker up as much as you can without damaging the finish of the model
4) Put a heavier clear finish over the stickers than the rest of the model. Even it all up with a final coat of the glossy/satin/matte level of your choosing.

I'm not 100% sure what the stickers are made out of, but you may also want to try putting a bit of vinegar on it after it's in place and heated/melted with the hair dryer (if you bother doing that). It works for waterslide transfers, but it might work on the stickers as well.

You'll definitely want to test these out somehow before endagering your model.

Thanks for the replies! I'll try it out.

Vinigar? Is that what Micro Set is? I thought it smelled familiay. :)

I can scan and reprint most of the stickers myself except for the ones with white on clear. Yellow seems weak too.

Here is another great place for buying Gundam decals. It is my favorite place for buying Gundam models. I bought 2 on a Saturday and recieved both during the week.

Yeah, they are good. One of the better Gundam shops. I bought most of my Turn A Gundam kits from them. Unfortunatly they only carry the Bandai Gundam Decals that only come in Master Grade 1/100 scale for a limited set of kits. No Perfect Grade Decals yet.Sad [:(]

I guess can look around to see if there are any places that make custom decals till Models4U is back up.

Another source for decals is Griffon Games. They primarily do decals for sci-fi miniatures (usually 1/60th through 1/300th). They do take custom orders though:
