The AMT Slave l

I just drop $17.00 for this kit (AMT Slave 1 Star Wars). I have never done any sci-fi kits.  What  can  anyone tell me of AMT Star Wars kits?

They all need alot of care with fit and finish but tend to build up to be nice displays. Just take your time with the fit up and you should be alright. Also check out the reference pages on the Starship Modeler site and you'll find what you need as far as some great detail photos.

Thanks for the reference.  I checked it out yesterday and it will be a good start.  I have never built a Star Wars model and my local hobby store does not carry a whole lot of Star Wars or any other Sci-fi.

hey bro the AMT slave 1 is quite a pain to build, really, it'll take most of your time and it still wont be completely accurate. i know it's cheap. but if you were going for a first ever starwars kit why don't you go for a finemolds one? you just might lose interest in sci-fi kits if you start with a hard kit like the AMT slave 1. i know the FM slave 1 color scheme is for Ep.II(Jango fett), but just color it with Boba's color scheme..together with minor alterations and you are on your way to having a fantastic kit. but, as always..this is just my 2 cents.Smile [:)] and Good luck!

It can be doneWink [;)] This is my Slave1 from the AMT kit. Yes it doesn't have all the detail of the Fine Molds kit but if you take your time fitting it up it looks great. Still painting it is most of the pain and thats the case with either kit.

I think someone needs to take better care of their ship:)  Nice weathering job.  I would like to say that any kit can be made to look nice but I am not that experienced or familiar with a lot of different kits.

Maxx1969 nice work.  This will add to my references.

Snoopy, man I looked as several of the websites where I get some of my models.  They do not have any fine mold models.Hobbylink Japan had Fine molds aircraft, but I could not find any sci-fi.  Maybe I looked at the wrong spot.  I did manage to find several Star Wars made from AMT.

Great build matt! one of the best i've seen so far. what did you use for the wheathering? Maskol and Salt/Paint chipping?

For ernie: Great decision on the FineMolds project! Good luck and don't forget to post your build when it's done!Wink [;)]

p.s. i know finemolds kits are a bit on the $$$ side, but trust me, it's worth the quality!

Thanks Luis. The weathering is a combination of salt mask and liquid friskit built up in layers on a silver base coat. Its a ton of work and time for a paint job but the only way I could think of to make it look right.

Salt masking is when you apply wet salt to the surface of the model in random patches. After it drys and your airbrushing it will blow some of the salt off and some stay in place. When the paint drys just rub the salt off and it leaves behind rough edges and chipped paint look.

Liquid friskit is a latex masking agent used in art work. You can find it at most art supply and craft stores. You just brush it on, wait for it to dry, and after the paint drys it peals off the surface. The nice thing is that it wont peal up the paint being masked like tape can do at times and it doesn't leave behind any tacky film when its removed no mater how long it sets on the surface.
