Speeder bike ( return of the jedi )
Posted by plane mad on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 12:02 PM

Can anyone coment on the quality of the old AMT speeder bike kit from return of the jedi ?

-Hows the fit, detail ,etc. I get the feeling it may be a fixer upper......

I saw one in a shop for 20 euros today and i'm pretty sure it would have to be a collectors item so i'm thinking about getting it.

-thanks for any help ....

The speeder bike is actualy really good however the figure needs alot of work with fit and filling of seams. It builds up great with some work.

You can find them on ebay all the time at a good price. I have gotten 2 from there at around $6.00 US each.

I just started work on the second one but I'm not going to build it as the Endor versionEvil [}:)]

I don't know if this will help since I haven't built mine yet but it looks to me like it will be a fun build. The Scout Trooper I'm not very fond of and will require modifications. The bike will also need a few mods just for fun such as hoses and the blanket but it seems to me like it is a nice match to the actual movie speeder as is. I'm sure there will be seams to fill but I enjoy overcoming that part of my builds anyway.

nothing new here.  the figure sucks, the bike's alright.  the trooper comes in two halves for each major part, ie torso+ legs and the arms.  the halves don't fit together well at all and you'll be filling some serious gaps and sanding prominent seems.  as i remember correctly, my fiance who was actually the one that built that kit ended up building the speeder itself but gave up on the trooper and shot him up with a bb-gun or burned him or something (yeh, we're very mature me and her... Smile [:)])

the bike is alright at best.  no huge problems as far as i can tell but no real details and you'll have to fix some blemishes as well. HOWEVER this is probably one of the better AMT kits although that's not saying much.

I just started the figure and remebered that you'll need to remove all the alignment pegs on the both the body and the arms. This will greatly reduce the amount of filling to do and will help out with the alignment of the parts. The other thing with it is that the hands on him look way wrong and you'll need to file them to a more realistic shape and define the fingers a little more. You can see it in these pics (note I also cut off his head and rotated it to the right for a different look):

If you get into building this thing and add the Scout Trooper then keep the foot pads and handle bars loose untill you ready to mount the Scout. The parts will match up much better and have a more realistic stance.

This is what I did with mine:

I thought the shape resembled a rebel transport, so I made it into a sort of armed freighter. The kit is also a grat source for greeblies, hoses, lines, etc.

Thanks Matt. I was hoping I could get someone else to try a similar conversion to see their take on it.

When i built my speeder bike i remember that the back engine has a huge seam problem. Since its a bunch or ribbed curved parts its hard to get rid of that seam. Sorry no pic of it.

that seam "was" a pain in the butt. i really took my time sanding that part to look good.

On my kit i replaced the wires on the steering rods with Guitar wire #4(the smallest string with wire woven around it) the plastic that came with the model was trash. i replaced the turbines(tubes?) underneath the speeder with copper wire, wrapped around thinner copper wire. then i replaced the speeders "bag"(found on the rear of te speeder) with real cloth, then i used some thinner cloth for the straps.
