Subs in Space...
Posted by DanCooper on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 1:07 PM
I'm currently working on Trumpeter's SSN-21 Seawolf (for those of you who spent a little too much time in other galaxies : it's an attack submarine Smile [:)] )  and while holding the hull for the glue to set I was thinking this would make a great starter as a basic spaceship shape.
Anyone who has used ship- or submarine hulls for kitbashing/scratchbuilding a spaceship ?
Let the ideas and/or pics come....

I remember back in the early 80s a cartoon out of Japan called "Starblazers."  The earth spaceship in that was designed with heavy influence of Japanese WWII submarine looks...

Check these out from that show:

Amazing, I had never thought that the idea has been used so many times before.

The ship used in Starblazers was actually the IJN Yamato from WWII that was secretly ressurected for a deep space mission the save the earth from it's latest enemies.  The series lasted for a season or two and a couple movies I believe.

There were three seasons but I don't know how many movies. I have whatched all three seasosn. By the third season it gets extreamly redundant but it still my favoite cartoon sci fi series asdie from Robotech. That site was very interseting esp the link to the message board where they discussed making a sub work in space. I amy pick up a sub at the Hobby Lobby sale this week. BTW did I mention that models are half off this week! :)

Well, tomorrow, I'm going to order me a second Seawolf-kit and have a blast with it.
Maybe, just maybe if there would be enough interest we could try to start up a groupbuild for turning a (war)ship into a spaceship ?

Hmmm not a bad idea Cooper, not bad at all. Always wanted to try a build like this but I could never get the motivation.

At one point I had the idea of taking the 1/200 Yamato and converting it into the Starblazers ship.  I had the opportunity to get one a few times while in Okinawa but never did.   Could you imagine the reaction at a regional contest when you walked in with that one?  Especially from hte ship purists in the room.

That would requre quite a bit of modification. I belever there are examples of both ships at shipschematics.com and you can do a comparison. After a quick glasnce I noticed that that project was beyond my scope at this point but I say give it a shot. Someone has to do it!LOL

Well for those interested, I've opened a tread in the GB, at the moment only one reaction, but with few more we can make it happen.

You'll find the tread under the name "would there be enough interest for this ?"   (how do I insert a link these days ???)

Ok, this little idea of mine has gotten its name now, you can all join the Earthbound Into Space GB in the GB section.
Please, don't push, there's room enough for everyone.

I'm on borad with the Group Build. It makes fundamental physical sense, because submarines and starships are both cans of air.

Yep, coolest starship next to a shipnamed Enterprise!LOL Yeah the Argo/Yamato has alway been one of my favorite ships. Won first place with a build on one a couple of years back.
