I recently purchased the polar lights Enterprise. The instructions for the kit refer to a technique called Aztecing and shows an example....Can anyone walk me through this or give me any tips?

If you go to www.federationmodels.com they have aztecing decals for this. Look in the Decals section under aztec dummy,he made a special set of these for the NX-01,the big kit,and the small one too.A lot of people have had great success with these.

Try CultTvman's Hobbyshop.com for a full set of these masks (I think there under $70).

Here's a nifty little example of aztecing...

http://www.stingraysmadness.com/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=29&MMN_position=30:5

The effect is to have the look of multiple shades of color on the model's plates, as seen in the later Star Trek creations in shows and movies.  This is done with either pre-made decals, or by masking and painting in multiple steps to get the effects.

A lot of work, but some really awesome effects.  Here;s another model to consider for fancy paint, by the same guy.  Not aztecing quite, but very cool in the multi-tones effect:

If you are interested, I documented my build process here:

I used the Aztec Dumy templates and was very happy with the results....

ross, that is really sharp!  Are the darker portions on the plates the decals?  They look nice and subtle compared to what I would think of decals coming out like.

Very Nice Ross Thumbs Up [tup]!!! I finally got my hands on a 1/1000 NX-01 the other day at of all places my local hobby shop. A few years back I fell into a modelmakers abyss, pretty much one local shop that caters mostly to R/C, and I have 2X or 3X more unbuilt kits in my collection than is in this shop. Every once in a while they sneak something new on the the shelf though and this was it. Glad to finally have in my collection to go with my 1/350 kit. Again GREAT build Thumbs Up [tup]. Keith

P.S. Thanks for the link, lots of good info.

The two shades are paint not decals.  I picked up the Aztec templates from Aztec Dummies, it was easy, just follow the instructions.  You lay down one of the metalizer colors, clear coat it, add the templates and then add the next color, remove the templates and clear coat it again.  It's all in the link...

Yah, I re-read the forum you posted your details in and smacked myself for being a dork.  That is a very, VERY nice step-by-step you did.  And the results are awesome!  Really not that difficult, just takes time more than anything.

I'd like to find a similar masking decal set for the PL 1/1000 Enterprise to do the seamlines for the "plated look".  But I think I got an idea just looking this over in better detail and not spacing out on the pretty pics ;).  Being I work at for a company that does custom engraving, label and decal making of sorts, etc., I think I know just what to do now, in re-thinking it.

Thanks a million for sharing your wonderful work!

Question on hindsight... Do you know what sort of material those mask-decals were made of?

They are made out of some type of vinyl but I think you could make them out of frisket paper...

Good Luck, I am planning a second kit and thought I might try a submission to FSM with it, so I won't be able to post anything until it is finished and I hear back from FSM.

Actually, vinyl's the answer I was hoping for.  I recently got a new job.  I work for a company that does all sorts of work associated with "promotional products." I operate the engraver for making engraved plates of metal or plastic - like used for trophies, namebadges, signs, etc.  One part of the business makes vinyl signage, and also decals and such.

Sooooo... I am working on an idea for making a masking set similar to yours, but for the PL 1/1000 Enterprise and Klingon kits.  This would be for the thing I am chewing on in the Star Trek build... to do plate lines.

Actually, Lou (Aztec Dummy) has beaten you to the punch. He's got a set out for the D-7 and the 1/1000 Enterprise (Constitution). You can find them here: http://www.culttvman.net/shopping/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=55&cat=Aztek+Dummy

I've used the 1/1000 NX-01 templates and they are great! Just follow the directions and you can't go wrong.
