Not so small diorama w/ Gundam Vs Zaku
Posted by dj898 on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 2:05 AM
I need some advise what's the best way to simulate the battle damage with my Gundam diorama...

Below are the progress picture of the models and the bottom two are the latest one though I'm not satisfied with the result... (all done in the space of 3 days at night with just knife and cutter as I don't have my tools with me atm)

And latest shots...

Gundam's shoulder damage is now more in line with the techincal drawing or so I think... think of it as the outer plate of shoulder socket module blown away with the inner pipes exposed... they are basically four rods connected to make square box shape module  according to the spec...
what do you think...

[EDIT]
another update.

I'm still working on the endo/exoskeleton parts on both Gundam and Zaku...

Oh the carnage! I like the hydrolic rames in the shoulder and forarms. This is gonna be good. I also like the screen you placed in the left chest vent area.

The guys on the auto modeling site I go to tell me there is this ribbon/thread in the arts and crafts stores that looks like braided hose. That might look sweet in the damaged area.

here's the inner frame for RX-78 ver 1.5 :P

it's metallic grey on gun metal which is on the flat black with mix of silver base... and top'd with copper+fluorescent red/pink mix dry brushing...
it's lot darker but the camera flash make them washed out though

Yeah that looks like the stuff but I found mine at Walmart in a ben. It was called "craft cord" and was simply looped up with a paper sleeve around it rather than in a jar but that's the stuff. I'd take some paint it matt black and drybrusk some steel or silver on it or leave it matt black. Or use differnet red and blue cables dulled down with dull coat. Sky's the limit.

Oh, the version 1.5...  I was like "wat the heck, inner skeleton??!! you butchered two PG kits??!!"

I like the pic with the gundam holding its arm for a good swing, totally EZ8 fighting style there.

provided that I can dig up some more stuff more likely some kind of testing facility at the Feds base on Earth... I still need to make a building or two or think of a way to make the diorama and do away with the building coz I hate those - took too much time to build especially at 1/100 scale...

haven't done much damage on the bridge except the broken hand rails... I may add more damage as things progress - not much happening due to not such good weather for air brushing... :(

put the floor on the base and add the lines... I need to visit local hobby shop for some suitable 1/100 decals...

Couple of comments:

In your dio, I think the composition and stances of the figures you've decided on work fantastically. May want to alter the leg position of the fallen gundam a little bit to create more drama, but the hands thrown in front for defense are just superb. Second, I hope that the finish you've achieved in the first three pics in the above post is something you will apply to the dio, as it's just great.

For damage: The two open areas that I saw, that is the shoulder and foot of the fallen gundam require more 'gizmology' Tear open some piece of electronics that you no longer need and get some circuitry from there in the form of transistors, resistors, all softs of stuff. Get different gauges of wire, and just throw in as much as you can in there. A machine like a gundam is bound to have a boatload of machinery, hydraulics, and other systems behind that armour, so you have to demonstrate that. Now, I'm assuming any removal in such a violent fashion would have created some kind of mild explosion, maybe fire, smoke in the least, so when you paint it, you will want to incorporate a little bit of shading to darken and burn the areas around the missing limbs. Some cracked paint wouldn't hurt either, as at the base coat, all metals are 'metallic' (duh) in colour, and severe damage like that would not just leave the adjacent areas unaffected.

Never been a big "GunTank" fan but that one is pretty sweet. Recommend of course that if you tuck those old electronics in there you will have to paint them flat black or grey with a wash of black or burnt umber (a very dark, almost black, shade of brown). The burnt umber gives a kind of "dirty oil" effect. You have to keep in mind the circuit boards in this scale would represent machinery and not "true circuitry" so will have to be "scaled" accordingly by painting them. Looks great so far and juding from the pics above you certainly know what you are doing!lol You said some of the 1/100 gundams were "scratch built"  did you really mean "out of the box" (OOB)? BTW sorry to hear about your cat.

thanks for the comments :D

The full scratch built is 1/100 scale GunTank... As you can see it has the upper torso and lower section connected by coreblock. To you know Bandai hsa yet to release GunTnak in 1/100 scale MG or not...

the damage mod is still far from over and all I did with base is testing the arrangement. They are not painted at all...  And rainy days doesn't help...

Yea, I adopted that cat so long time ago and it really sad to see her go but as she was sufering after the stroke it's kind of relief in one sense that she is finally pain free... :(

Just so you know I meant no offense. I was amzed at the detail and i know how complex a Gundam is. For someone to say they built one from scratch amazed me. I have never built any of the original series Gundams save one, which was the black/grey prototype of the RX-78 (or is it 79 I forget), which was one of the old kits from before they had the poly cap system. I didn't know there wasn't a 1/100 scale Guntank, so that reflects my own Gundam ignorance.Blush [:I] So that makes your Guntank even more incredible because again I never cared for it's design until I saw your build and I know I cannot scratch build a gundam...yet.lol  It's more detailed and less cartoon like. It's looks like a real war machine because of the panel lines. They make all the difference. So again I say excellent build becasue though I may have a trophy or two under my belt for mechs and figures I ain't never seen (and probably will never build} a scratched Gundam!Bow [bow] Bow [bow]

No worries mate  :D

I got asked a lot of time whether that's HGUC 1/144 GunTank so it's no surprise...
I said full scratch but its torso is based on MG GunCannon - core fighter and shoulders are modified from MG kit... Had hell of time to make that clear canopy coz I couldn't find anything suitable and at the end pressed dozen using friend's vacuum pressing...He also helped me out with working the dimension in 1/100 scale comapred to 1/144 kit...

I probably will do new base as the one I used is bit too small...
remind me to pick up bigger frame and cardboard paper on Saturday... :P

it's just big box made of plastic sheet and epoxy puttuy. :D
The thread are provided by my friend. It's one of those you put together little tiny piece and they are all hed together by small tap at each end - hence it's prone to break down every time I handle the kit. In fact  fixed it just last month... :(
Maybe I will replace it with the single piece if I can find the one similar to what Tamya is supplying in 1/32 scale tank kit but in 1/100 scale...
