Why is this board so dead?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 14, 2006 3:22 AM
I do not mean to be mean, but I have noticed a huge difference between this board and the one over at starshipmodeler.com    I am wondering why these boards are so slow to respond sometimes and why there do not seem to be a lot of members. Was there a time when these boards were more active.....if so why are they not like that anymore?

Most sci-fi guys tend to hang out at SM. Many of us visit here cause we also do other models, like planes, tanks, cars. It's just neat lurking and checking out the builds of the non-sci-fi here. BUT, once in a while there's a guy who doesn't know about SM and posts amazing work here. Sometimes a guy is after a kit, and we know where to get it. I wouldn't say this place is dead, just slow.

Hi, I have noticed the same thing myself, it seems there is something new to read every 5 mins over at Starship Modeler. My guess is that SSM is sci fi specific, whereas Fine Scale Modeler is more general modeling. Most of the guys and girls who post here would be well aware of SSM and would probably do most of their correspondence over there. When it comes to sci fi, I know I do! I don't know if this is the case or not, just my opinion. Happy sci fi modeling, cheers, Chris

A forum is only what you make of it. There are many hobby forums out there, I happen to like this one. I prefer a smaller community as opposed to a massive, more anonymous community.

And yes, since SSM is a dedicated forum for sci-fi matters, it will get more attention in this area, just as you'll find specialized forums for tanks, ships, aircraft, etc.

Do you mean FSM as a whole, or just the Sci-Fi forum at FSM?

If you're referring to just the Sci-Fi forum, and comparing it to SSM, then it's as the others have said. SSM is a dedicated SF site, while this Sci-Fi forum is only one part of the larger FSM site. Not really a fair comparison. Obviously the majority of people who come to FSM are interested in subjects other than SF.

Since I also enjoy science fiction subjects, I check this forum out every time I visit FSM, but I'm also a member at SSM and other sites as well. Heck, when all you have to do is click a mouse a few times, I don't think it really matters how many sites you visit to get the info you need. I consider the Internet to be just one big forum!

It just is? SSM has got to be the most active scfi board in town. Even the scifi board over at ARC isn't as active as SSM.

Why, dunno. It just is.

One word sums it up, Family. The longer a board is around the more of a family it becomes keeping folks there and attracting new members. The sci fi section here can get to be quite the rockin community at times and seem to be even more so with group builds going on. If you want it, you got to make it.My 2 cents [2c]

Well I for one love it over here, because everyone leaves the attitude at the door.. Main reason is that there is no advertising or talk of personal gain over here..  (Although most of us think trading is fair game)... I like SSM, but it can be a little clicky at times, and you can get flamed pretty quickly by people who THINK they know everything, and so I feel for people who are just starting out.. I never believe in a stupid question (as we all had to start somewhere) so here people will usually meet you with respect and advice.. I guess its slow here, because we think before we speak?.. But not always!.. Also, unlike SSM we dont always say "Awwwee pretty model".. We will 99% of the time be honest, and offer honest advice!.... ( I hope....)

I also like the idea of being able to talk about all subjects in the one place.. I for one go through 6 monthly cycles.. I spent all last summer building sci fi stuff, then over the winter, I fell in love with 1/48 jet fighters all over again... I even did the odd tank.. Now, I am back looking at sci fi kits.. But I can always stay up to date with the rest on the one board...

Chris
