Johnny Depp WOULD make a good Louis Wu, good call. As for Teela Brown, um, maybe Parker Posey?

Is Dune the one that had "Sting" in it?

For me, its always been one of those movies that I think I saw as a kid, but cant remember... I see it in the video store, pick it up, say to myself "I should watch this one day" but never do?

Not much of a reader, so the idea of books are totally lost with me, as is with the Lord of the Rings stuff.... You are all thinking, "Chris, what has this got to do with anything?"

But I guess I am just making the point of however good we become at something. Or as much as we all like to think we know. There are people out there that have different tastes and interests.. And I must say that this is the first time I have seen a post where a group of people have talked about Dune so passionately.. It is a nice break from the usual Star Trek and Star Wars banter that gets about...

I just wished I knew what you were all talking about, he he he

Oh my, could you imagine what kind of a set you would need for Ringworld. CGI would make it possible for a Puppeteer and Kzin.  Johnny Depp would make a great Louis Wu! Now who could play Speaker-to-Animals? And who to play Teela Brown?

I wonder if Larry Niven ever sold the rights? I'll have to ask him, I have his email around somewhere...

The sad thing is Ridley Scott had the Director's job for Dune, but realized that it would be 2-3 years in the making and had already committed to Bladerunner, and passed the torch back.

So long folks!

The Lynch movie WAS hideous. The first Dune book, though, is an all-time classic, as somebody noted, the quality sagged sharply thereafter.

I wish someone serious ( as serious as Jackson with LOFR, or Ridley Scott with Blade Runner) would tackle Dune, as well as Childhood's End and Ringworld.

I had all three of them yeras ago, found them at a LHS for around $10 each. Saved them till the late 90's and traded them to JFGreenModels for some ST stuff. The Sandworm turns up on EvilBay from time to time. I'll keep my eye open for it and let ya know if I come across one.

Looking forward to seeing the builds though...have to admit, the film sucked, but had some interesting effects.

The scifi channel series came out pretty good, covering dune, messaiah, and children of dune with only minor mods.  Pity I haven't seen any models kits out for them.  The redesigned omnithorpter and spice harvester looked cool.

I finished the first 4 books during two christmas breaks back in highschool years back right before the mini series came out.  That was like 15 days.  Surprisingly those were the only sci fi books I actually finished after I bought them aside from some warhammer 40k novels.

I should clarify that I liked the movie, just not as well as the books. Again, that is my wont, as I prefer Tolkien's books to Jackson's movies, as well. The movie certainly wasn't as successful as Lynch or de Laurentiis would have liked, and I understand that Sting hated it so much that he refuses to watch or discuss it. I've often wondered how Ridley Scott would have made out, had he kept the reins instead of dropping them in favor of Bladerunner (which I LOVED!).

Hmmm... a Ridley Scott Dune would have been very interesting!

The models we're talking about are from the Lynch/De Laurentiis (forgot there were two i's in there) movie.

Are there any from the Sci-Fi Channel productions?

I first read Dune in 1971-72 (somewhere about there, anyway) and read all the sequels with diminishing relish, as is wont with most sequels, I find. Typically early writings are often the best writings (ie I loved Stephen King's short stories and first few novels, but either I matured, or his writing skill waned. As my wife claims I'm not maturing... ). I thought the Universe Herbert created was amazing. In fact I once had a cat named Maud'Dib! I wanted to name another cat Harkonnen, but was over-ruled by SWMBO.

Wow Brian, look at all the cool stuff you've got!

Can't say I've even seen a kit about Dune. If I recall properly, to call a Sand Worm you have to go and beat on the surface of the sand, perhaps one will show up on it's own? (tee hee, I'm getting away with telling someone to go and pound sand!.)

Loved the book, can't say the same for the movie.

Yup, I'm loaded with cool stuff! Smile [:)]

Guess I gotta keep my senses tuned for wormsign...

I entered the Dune universe via the De Laurentis film in the 80's (which I loved!), then finally got around to reading all the books during the last five years (all of Frank's original stuff AND the books by his son Brian and others). I love it all! Such a huge universe...the only thing I missed in the books that was in the film were the "weirding modules"...I thought that was a cool idea.

Two down, one to go! (Dune kits)
Posted by J-Hulk on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 11:43 AM

I'm not sure how popular the Revell kits from Dune are with the sci-fi modelling community, and I'm not really sure how rare these kits are, but I've been keen to collect all three (Ornithopter, Sand Crawler, and Sandworm) for years now. Having found an Ornithopter a few years ago, I had been on the lookout for the other two...and found another Ornithopter and a Sand Crawler today at an LHS! Super-cheap, too. The Ornithopter was 1,900 yen (US $16.40), and the Sand Crawler was only 900 yen (US $7.75). I think these generally go for much more elsewhere.

So yeah, that's two down (with an extra Ornithopter to boot), and only the Sandworm to go! Which I've never seen...anywhere.

And to keep this from being just a goofy "Hey, look at the cool stuff I got!" thread, is anyone else out there interested in the Dune kits? Any ideas on current pricings? Whereabouts of a Sandworm kit?

Thanks!
