Warhammer 40k conversion idea/concept
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, July 30, 2006 8:40 PM
I'm in the planning stages for a unit for my Tau Empire army. I liked the idea of human auxillaries that was on the website some time ago. Basically, a mix of Imperial Guard and Tau units. Got me thinking, what about a Sentinel walker in the service of the Tau? I was thinking of slapping a fusion blaster on the side instead of Imperial weaponry. Also, I was thinking of using a cut down version of the jet pack from the Crisis suits to make a Tau-upgraded exhaust/engine system on the back. Any thoughts on this? Any ideas?

By rule that was really just an ally thing, i doubt the weapon characteristics can actually carry over, unless you got special rule books on that.

The burst cannon would look kul on a sentinel since it looks like the multilaser and you probably have extras from a hammerhead kit.  If you are like some other player who only uses the low points burst cannon on their hammerheads, you can have the smart missile system left over.  Add some winglet weapon sponson arms on the sides of a sentinel or the starboard side of a chimera apc turret (kinda reminds one of the bradley's missile system.).  You can make some better exhaust system just by scratch from styrene sheets instead of wasting a whole crisis suit.  A multi-leaf exhaust grille on top of a trapezoidal box will suffice.  Simple upgrades are like adding some sensory spines so it can act as drone controllers then instantly you get yourself 2 to 4 gun drones to fly around for fun.

I personally don't think Tau and an IG army complement each other well enough (not including kroots).  Both are pretty crappy at close combat and tend to get shooty with heavy weaponry.  So if you really want, you can mix and match any weapon system you want.  But if you REALLY want to add some punch to an IG armory, get those separate sprues available for the Tau hammerhead, which has two of Tau's best, the Ion Cannon and the Rail Gun.  Even the marines will scream for cover.

I was thinking that the Sentinel was an old Imperial piece, and like the troops, is in the service the Tau. It would essentially BE an Imperial Guard unit, pilot and all, like the human auxillaries, but perhaps upgraded by the Tau (as Kroot shapers can be given a pulse rifle). True, the two armies are similar, but I think that's why it'd be easy to throw in a squad of human auxillaries, just to add some depth to the army, not so much firepower or tactics. Also, I need something to break up the color scheme. Also, I think I'm gonna add some capes to my Pathfinder team and give them a camo scheme, make them look more like a scout team then I currently have them. Top link is for the human auxillaries, bottom is what the cape would look like.

oh kul, didn't know they had a new rule like that.  it doesn't really list an option to take a sentinel, but for fun factors i urge you to go ahead and build one to accompany your IG troops.  Twin-linked burst cannons for the left and the right weapon then missile as see fit.  (yea when i saw the tau as they came out, i got so sucked in by burst cannons.... =P)  Which sentinel are you using though?  The cheaper catachan opentop one would probably be a kul one to start with.  You can add more sensors and corresponding monitors n stuff to the cockpit.  Another major work i can think of, is take some anti grav/hovering mech's bottom piece (or build some platform with lost of downward facing boosters) and replace the sentinels legs with them since the Tau has all these flyers.  Sorta look like the destroyers from the Necrons.
