AMT/ERTL A-wing Fighter progress (updated 7-21-07)
Posted by Mikeym_us on Thursday, August 24, 2006 10:41 PM

well right now I'm putting these pics up this is the undercoat right now which is metallic silver. So far I am going to do something different. The blue blotches in the picture aren't a effect of the camera they are Micro Mask from micro mark and once the black coating goes on the mask will come off and a fresh coat applied before the hull colors are applied and the net results will be areas of large scale paint chipping to simulate weathering. and Blaster burns will be applied via Tamiya Smoke Gray. and also on the back burner is AMT/ERTL's B-wing Fighter.

see how shiney it is. Please keep these picture out of reach of ferrets and Raccoons.

I'll try to take some pictures of the A-wing parts with the coat of flat black paint sometime tommorow. seeing as I haven't assembled it yet it will be easier to get the rest of the major painting done before assembly.

ok here are the second group of pics

these are of the A-wing painted all black

here are pics of the A-wing with the masking film removed.

now hopefully I'll try to get the fuselage together then remask the silver areas before starting on the gray top coat.

it is pretty straight forward in a ways. If the A-wing was assembled then painted after assembly lots of areas would be inaccessable for a wash of black India ink. Plus painting the undercoat and mid coat before assembly would ensure less handling than painting during assembly. As a matter of fact I have the hull assembly assembled and will have some pics up later. I just need to decide on either a coat hanger painting rig or a fishing line rig to hang the A-wing so it can be painted. I also have the twin laser cannons set aside for last so that they won't break plus I'll need to do a different paint job on those since this A-wing won't be any common movie A-wing but be done in the way they should be painted in the Star Wars universe.

now lets see how I do with the paintjob. I might go with a light sea gray paintjob.

well seeing as all starfighters are Exo-Atmospheric (capable of flying inside or outside of a planets atmoshpere) there should be carbon scoring where the space craft would enter the atmosphere. Good thing I have Tamiya's smoke Gray since that would do a great job simulating the blaster burns and the char from reentry.

ok Boys and girls have the base coat on and though I originally wanted a Medium gray  I found it was too dark so I went with Testors MM Flat Gull Gray which went on pretty good now onto a clear coat before I do the Wash. and then its onto the Squadron color. Red squad has been done to death and hasn't the color for gold squad been done wrong because from what I've seen from Episode 4 and 6 the gold color is actually yellow not gold or at least a Yellow Orange shade. But me I'm going to do my A-wing in the Gold squadron color of gold (I actually have Tamiya's Titanium Gold which would work just fine)

Oh yeah here are the pics

bonus pic my other project after the B-wing

I've got another silly question. Why do you use a black base coat?

I see the use for the metallic (to make paint chips) but why do you then spray black as a base coat for your light grey?

well as you know in many militaries when they paint equipment they paint a different paint scheme over an existing one and when the paint would chip you could see the layers of colors that were used in the past. In fact if you chipped the paint off of a F-14 you could find several layers of different color Gray paint on any given panel. As for my A-wing it wouldn't have been far fetched for the Rebels to have repainted the A-wing prior to the Battle of Endor from Spec ops black paint scheme to the color you see now. And then the A-wing may have been caught up in a fleet defensive action just days before that particular A-wings mother ship rejoined the Rebel Fleet. Oh and since this is the original AMT A-wing it does have the raised panel lines and fastener heads so I believed it would make sense to prepaint the hull black before I did anything in a lighter color.

Ok now I did it I now have to contend with a TIE Fighter along with the TIE Interceptor Laugh [(-D]

Why me! Why me! Laugh [(-D]

well I have the engine pods assembled and painted as well as temporarily attached to the rear bulkhead. The thruster pack is also painted and installed on the rear bulkhead. I'll get some pics up probably tommorow to prove this. Up next will be removal of the rear bulkhead and engine pod assembly for sealing and wash. Now as for that last part should I paint the outboard halves of the engines gold or just leave them be and go with painting the fins with gold stripes instead?
