PL DeLorean (Photos)
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, August 30, 2003 8:00 PM
I recently completed the Polar Lights 1/25 Back to the Future Time Machine. A beautiful kit, almost no fit problems (it's designed as a snap kit), and good detail. I replace the kit windscreen with clear styrene so that the side windows would be 'down', allowing more visibility into the detailed interior. I also had to create the 'DMC' logo for the grille, since it is notably absent from the kit. Enough talk, here are the pics:

BTW, the caption on the case reads, "Are you tellin' me you built a time machine - out of a DeLorean!?" -- Marty McFly. This was a present for my father-in-law, who loves the Back to the Future movies.

I always liked the DeLorean, in general. Nice detail work. Have you tried the hover version yet?

The hover version is from Aoshima, and since I just wanted to build the machine from the first movie, the price was right for the Polar Lights kit. :)

Scalehobby,

She looks great!!
I built the Aoshima hover version, and it really is worth picking up!
No fit problems at all! There's also 1:18 scale die cast pre-buit versions of them out there(pre-built----YUK!) that don't look too bad(not by Aoshima though). They even have a street legal non time machine Delorean available too.

Thanks. You know, I've heard other people say the Aoshima kits were nice too. I just may have to get me one of them! Smile [:)]

Very nice!
I like the way you captured the look of the stainless steel finish.

I finally gave up waiting on a re-release of the hover version of this car and went ahead and picked this kit up! Boy am i glad that i did. It comes with parts to make either the original version or the version with the Mr. Fusion core [which appears for the first time at the end of the first movie]and includes both the "OUTATIME" and the "bar code" license plates. If I pick up another one i'll kit bash a hover version. Since the head lights are crome how do you make them more "realistic".

Hey Steve, I didn't even know you were over here on FSM. That Time Machine is a beauty! The SS looks real!

The great thing about this kit is that the body is electroplated with an artificial stainless steel finish. [The Polar Lights web site even quotes it as such, funny they don't state it on the box or I would have baought it sooner!] I have heard people complain about the "micro scratches" in the surface but what they don't seem to realize is that it is supposed to look that way. A real Delorean isn't painted [though there are a few that were] it is raw stainless steel and doesn't rust. The "micro scratches" are in a swirl pattern to immitate what you would find on true stainless steel. The plate is a little too bright though, but it shoudn't be hard to "dull" it down a tad...

Great job. I guess the kit doesn't look too bad after all. I shyed away from it when I saw no "official" DMC logos on the kit. Maybe I can find it for cheap at WalMart or Target...

The kit only sells for $9.98 at Wal Mart [along with the Ecto 1 and the Mystery Machine] but you had better hurry because I last saw these kits on the clearance aisle for $7 at Wal Mart and now they are gone from the Wal Marts in my area because I waited too long. I had to pay $15 for my DMC at Hobby Lobby but it was still well worh it.Wink [;)]
