R/G ARC-170 w/Extras
Posted by rossjr on Saturday, December 9, 2006 11:18 PM

Well I finally got around to working on the Revell Germany ARC-170 kit I've had for awhile now.  This is one of Revell Germany's easy kits, in other words pre-painted but this one I stripped, painted and used some aftermarket parts.  Here is what I started with...

Box Art  - A little blurry sorry...

Since the kit is rather plain, I picked up a cockpit and landing gear kit from Controled Energy Design, and since I will be painting the kit myself I would need decals so I picked up a sheet from JM Enterprises.  The original kit lacks landing gear and the cockpits are really plain, but adding the cockpit kit really spices things up.  I also cut out a black panel on the side of the fuselage and replaced it with a window, as seen in the movie...

The next couple of shots show the landing gear.  The kit is not designed for them so the aftermarket kit has a replacement part and a bay that needs to be cut in.

One lesson learned about this kit, if you are going to repaint it, is strip the paint while it is on trees, it's a lot easier...  I sprayed the kit Camoflauge Grey and added Crimson Red for the accent panels.  I then used Lt. Ghost grey for more panels along with Jet Exhaust and Black and Dk Ghost grey to round out the engines and other panels.  After the decals were applied I used a number of washes and dry brushed the kit with Lt Ghost Grey.  After a coat of clear flat I added some accents with MM Metalizer Exhaust.  Enjoy!

Rossjr

You did some nice work here! Its not often that we see kits from any besides the the "first"  three SW movies, its nice to see something new .

I have a couple of the US release Revell kits ( I think they are revell, they may be AMT) from Episode 3 and they are interesting, but again, lacking...........cool stuff tho!

thanks for sharing

David

Excellent work, as always, John! You bringin' this one to WonderFest '07, I hope? Big Smile [:D]

I just noticed something tho...  Did you forget the Astromech Droid?  Or am I misremembering and there's not one included w/the kit?

Thanks Jeff! I am planning on going to WF this year but I will have to wait and see what my employment and financial status are like first. Chris would come with and my father wants to go this year so I have plenty of people to share costs with...

I decided to leave out the astrodroid since I left out the clones. Erin's kit has some nice options but since I left the people out of it I decided to leave the astrodroid slot empty. I still have them in case I every change my mind...

Havnt checked in for a few days.. And I nearly missed this little gem.. Great work mate.. Almost picked one up a few weeks ago, but my interest in SW has waned a little.. Does the Revell kit come with with the pilots and droids?

The Revell kit comes with pilots but no droids.  The cockpt and landing gear set comes with a couple of astrodroids and has great replacement pilots for it.

Thanks everyone!

I've always wondered about these SW ships...

Ya know in the movies, you hear a line along the lines of "Lock air spoilers in attack position!"

But, unless I'm sorely mistaken, there is no air in space to spoil.  LOL  Guess Lucas figures we're all that dumb and it sounds good in his script so that's what they're gonna say darnit all.  LOL

Cool build btw!

Actually, it's "Lock S-Foils in attack position".  Just sayin'. Smile [:)]

An "in universe" reason I've read somewhere is that the reason the X-Wings did that was to both increase the firing arc and to open up the weapons generators to the cold of space so that they wouldn't overheat - or some such.
