USS Saratoga-DS9
Posted by Admiral Grasshopper1 on Monday, February 19, 2007 11:25 PM

Hello I have not posted in awhile, this is my first model I have done in 9 months,I lost interest for awhile, but I had this kit and decided to bash it into the Saratoga.

For starters,I had to make a mold for the right nacelle, because the original was damaged with no detail being in the front,it crumbled when I touched it for the first time.

Well after I made the mold from the left nacelle,I cast one and repaired the right nacelle. Then I hand made the rear of the guns from wood pegs from a bookcase I have,I made the front of the guns from another kit I have. Then I cut the small retangles to attach the guns to from a square of styrene I had in my stash box.

And so far the pics are of my progress so far,I should have this finished by tommarrow,Enjoy.

Holy cow! I thought at first you were using AMT's Reliant as the starting point, and then I saw you holding it, and about fell out of my chair! Yeah you gotta show us this one finished!!

You know the funniest thing.......... OK, so you have to have a navigational deflector right? This is so that even the smallest particles of dust cant rip holes in the hull while at speed, right?

Where does a Miranda class keep hers hidden??Confused [%-)]

Now that's a question that's plagued many a Trekker since Reliant's appearance in TWOK. If you have the book Ships of the Star Fleet Volume One, there is one other frigate class [Daran] which has compensated for this discrepency.

Of course, modelling canon frigates true to form and keeping them plausible would be quite difficult. It's at this I would ditch canon and scratchbuild a pair deflector mounts in one of three places: the bow, just forward of the shuttlebay support systems [Daran Class uses both these options],  and the forward end of the warp nacelles [my own option].... On second thought, I doubt the engine option would really work. Pesonally, I prefer the bow option simply for the fact it the most forward position

The 'Tholian Cusiser' with warp nacelles, also known as the USS Aurora, is an example of Star Fleet inventory w/o a large parabolic dish main deflector.  As for the Reliant, the current belief is that the two sets of 4 square boxes on the underside of the aft fan tail are the main deflector emitters.  Forget who on the art direction staff claimed that was this the function of these greeblies, but this assertion is somewhat supported by someone actually working on the show, instead of being a totally fan derived speculation.

BTW, very nice effort.

What scale is that, it looks familiar. I bought one years ago, an in between scale, with a stinky resin. The saucer ended up delaminating along the grid lines. Still have the parts. I turned the 1701-A from same manuf. into a Baker class. Nice job on the "save" though.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the kind words. The scale on this I think is 1400,but I am not sure on that. It measures 6 inches long by 3 and 1/2 inches wide. Yeah I wanted to bash this into something, and I figured I have not seen a kit for Sisko's ship from the attack at Wolf359,so I would make one.So far it has turned out good,I haven't had time to finished it.I was sick with the stomach flu for about a week. Now I can't find my paint, time for early spring cleaning(LOL).

But I think I should have it finished in another week here.I will post more pics as I finish it.Again thanks.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

pretty much the Saratoga was a Miranda Class frigate without the roll bar/sensor package and the addition of a pair of X-wing style Phaser cannons where the roll bar met the hull on both sides.

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

The 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron the only Squadron to get an Air to Air kill and an Air to Ground kill in the same week with only a F-15 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/Mikeym_us/

Sorry I have not posted any updates on this in awhile, but I just got to paint this and detailing it a little today,I feel burnout from doing models. I just don't have the fire I once did to do these. But here is any update pic of it,I have the decals and a little touch up and it is finished. I guess I like how it turned out considering.Enjoy:

Well I have not had much response to this, but I know why. Anyway I did some research and the scale on this is 1/1400. I found another one of these for sale on another site and it was the same model kit,and it stated the scale was 1/1400.

Anyway I should have the decals made for this by this weekend and have this finished I hope by next week sometime. I have a few more kits to do and finish up and I think I will be getting out of doing them. I really have not had much interest in doing kits anymore, and as Scotty said: "It is time I acted my age,and stop living in a computer generated fantasy." Well it may have not been said exactly like that but I think you get the gest.

I would like to publically apologize for any comment or action that has happened in the past, and thanks those who have commented on my models I have shared here. Thanks everyone.

Avenger-class deflectors...

I recall some reference book or other tagging the "bumps" on the upper surface of the saucer as the deflectors.  I'm referring to the domelike structures on either side of the bridge and a little aft, midway along the length of where the classic saucer and the "built up" extension meet.  These look loke the same structures that the Enterprise class has around the base of its deflector in the sides and keel.  If 3 of these domes are needed, then the Reliant ( but not Saratoga, Lantree or others with no rollbars ) has it in the slight recess on the top of the photorp pod...I think.

I'll look through my old books and see which one it is for reference.

the navigational deflectors on these ships is actually those two 'slots' aft of the bumps.

Star Trek Geek Alert!  Avoid reading any further if you get annoyed by such conversations! The author can not be found responsible if your delicate sensibilities are damaged by the below. Dunce [D)]

Technically, the navigational deflector on the Avenger/Miranda-class starships have never been identified.  We're talking canon here, not fan speculation.  There's nothing in the official callouts that the studio folks used that identifies them, either.  Basically, dedicated nav deflectors on the Reliant studio model were overlooked accidentally or just ignored by TIIC.

Ships of the Star Fleet, Volume One -Revised (SotSF) notes that the semi-rectangular things with large "vents" that's on the bottom aft section of the extended hull are supposed to be the nav deflectors.  There are one or two "Treknical" publications that call out similar areas or completely different areas.  I tend to agree with SotSF as it makes the most sense to me, but really don't care any more as it's just such a kewel darned design in my book.  Plus, it's pretty much fruitless to argue with some folks either way, so just go with what makes you happy, is what I say.  Propeller [8-]

actually I agree with you there.

my personal preference is for the WADE units as shown on the Daran Class.

this is also a logical location and a logical extrapolation of the device's function.

especially when you consider that this type of ship has no secondary hull and therefore no need for a large , round deflector.
