That's a winner, I love it.

I have that old AMT kit in a closet that I still want to weather some day.  What you did is really inspiring.

There is a really nice build! I've got the AMT version in my stash too. Only thing i'm waiting on is the upgrade kit for the sides. Last time i checked, it was outta stock from Starship Modeller (i think it was made by Blue Moon). Until then, the Falcon will have to wait....

Warmest regards,

That is really nice!!!

What technique did you use to do

a). the blackish colored weathering along the seam lines?

b.) the different shades of gray on the panels.

For the black wash weathering I used Bruynzeel design Indian ink.  Straight from the bottle on to the model. Then with a rag, wipe in the direction (quickly) you want to go.  Alround the 6 exhaust vent I did it this way and then faded out with pastels.

For the panels I used earth tones pastel. The trick is to use different brushes. The areas around the lasercannons I  used a wide soft brush. And the equipment area bays are done with small and medium brushes.  I made a darker photo so you can see the detail beter.

This X-wing is my next project. The dark parts are done with Indian ink.

Superb !!

What kits are those?  Are they still available?  My older son (13) is a Star Wars fanatic.  Besides the movies, he's read seemingly every paperback in every series.  He even got in trouble at school a few times for reading his SW novels during class (I have no idea who he gets that behavior from Mischief [:-,] ).  I would really like to get him, as well as my younger (9) son a few Star Wars kits.  The only ones I've seen are the snap-together kits.  The boys have a couple of armor builds under belt, so I'd like to get them something with a little bit of teeth.

Nice Nice photos by the way !

Both models are very old ERTL/AMT kits.  This M. Falcon is at least 13 years old and the X-wing is older. I don't care for the new models. I think they cost too much and are put together to quickly . The older models don 't  have a lot of detail but how much detail you put in is up to you.  I wish you good luck on your search.

Yep! I concure with that. I too have both the X Wing and the Millenium Falcon from AMT. And they are available through any LHS. I got mine rather cheaply through ebay though. And i really want to start the Falcon too, but i'm waiting on the all the upgrade kits to become available again before i pull it off the shelf. Problem with their mold is that the sides of the hull are too wide. But they make an aftermarket kit to bring it back into the proper dimensions. It's a shame it's not in stock at the moment....

Warmest regards,

Roger

Thanks a lot for the information guys.  I asked my sons which kits they would like, so they got out their Star Wars "Vehicle Reference Manual".  On Saturday I searched eBay and purchased a few kits that seemed to be reasonably priced.

AMT Ertl Star Wars Milleneum Falcon cut-away model kit
AMT STAR WARS Imperial TIE FIGHTERS 1/72 Twin Kit
Ertl AMT Star Wars AT-AT Walker
AMT ERTL ANAKIN'S PODRACER

I guess this should keep them busy for a while.  Although I may steal the MF cut-away model for myself Pirate [oX)]

Thanks again for your help and advice.

Thats awesome! I love star wars.

I did a X-Wing model that included electronics, lights, and sounds. The foils would open and close at the touch of a button as well as the canopy. IP lit up and the engines. It had a stand that the wires went through to the base where you soldered the wires to the board. It was a fun kit and was like $10-15. I bought two! The one I built worked pretty good except the foils wouldnt close flush, im guessing the plastic was warped a little, but it is still cool.

I've had the AMT Cut Away Falcon for years sitting in the closet minus the instructions.  You wouldn't happen to be able to scan them for me and email would you?  This would be greatly appreciated.

Excellent job on that one! Seeing the pics reminded me that I like the 'well used and abused' look that Star Wars models often have compared to their Star Trek counterparts? I guess that arguably the MF suffered 'abuse' on it's entry/exit to atmosphere wherever it went? Oh, and the occassional weapons fire? Certainly gives more opportunity for weathering techniques which you've displayed so well!

Very nice!

Yeah, and the MF cut-away version is actually reasonably priced; my LHS has it in-stock for $30.00 which, considering inflation, is about the price I paid for the non cut-away version 20 years ago!

1/48th Monogram A-37 Dragonfly: 95% (so close!); 1/35th Academy UH-60L: 90%; 1/35th Dragon "Ersatz" M10: 75%; 1/35th DML E-100 Super Heavy Tank: 100%; 1/48 YF-12A, 95%; 1/48 U-2R: 90%; 1/48 B-58 Hustler: 50%; 1/32 F-117, 50%; 1/48 Rafale M: 50%; 1/48 F-105D: 75%; 1/48 SOS A-1H Skyraider: 50%; 1/48th Hobby Boss Su-27: 50%; 1/16th Revell Lamborghini Countach: 75%; 1/12th Otaki Lamborghini Countach: 25%; Tamiya 1/35th M3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle: 25%

You'll faint when I tell you that I paid $15 for the kit (eBay) ....which includes the shipping costs. The kit just arrived 2 days ago......still in it's original shrink wrap.  I almost feel guilty for practically stealing this kit.

Agreed.. Although I have collected alot of the newer stuff. You just cant go past an X-wing in 1/48 scale.. I have collected 3 or 4 of the old X-wing and Darth Vader Tie kits and also built a resin 1/48 Y-Wing.. The only complaint I have is that the Darth Tie is bigger at 1/32 -5 or there abouts, but no reason to not scratch one in 1/48..

Here is my X-Wing and Y-wing builds..

I thought about getting the FS MF, but like yourself and alot of other guys, I will be building up the old kit with scratched walls ect.. So I will definately be looking at yours for reference!

Cheers,
Chris

Check out the AMT TIE Interceptor kit. It's snaps together and builds up nice. Also, there are several different schemes you can give it.Along with the standard movie version, there are TIE's of the 181st squadron that have red stripes on the wings. Then there is the Royal Guard version which is primarily red with white trim.
