Kit Scale, large or small?
Posted by Rob Gronovius on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 12:54 PM
What I mean is do you prefer building huge vessels in a small scale like the Enterprise, Star Destroyer, Gundam or a vehicle in a larger scale like an X-Wing, Starfury, Snow Speeder?

I prefer vehicles that are closer in scale to mainstream kits like 1/72, 1/48, 1/35.

I like them both, as it wouldn't be practical to have an Enterprise kit in 1/48th scale. I like what Fine Molds is doing with Star Wars craft in a consistent scale, and hope Polar Lights is going to do the same thing with 1/100 scale ships of Star Trek. I know a lot of people are hoging they will do more with 1/350 scale like the NX-01 due out this year, but that scale just isn't practical for me.

I agree that FineMolds has the right idea and the perfect scale. 1/72 is wonderful for several reasons; storage space, decent level of detail, and sheer volume of kits. I used to collect 1/48 scale jets but recently switched everything over to 1/72 so I could do easy size comparisons. (maybe you've seen some of my stuff on ebay) I've been buying military aircraft, armor, the Finemolds kits and even old Robotech and Dougram kits in 1/72. It is all very exciting! Of course, 1/72 would never work for huge starships, and rightly so, but just think... a 1/72 AT-AT...

FineMolds, I have my credit card ready!

Hah!
Say, what do ya'll reckon the scale is on the ol' 11-foot Enterprise that's on display at the Smithsonian (NOT displayed whenever I've visited, however!)?
Somewhere around 1/48, no? Let's see...the Enterprise is supposed to be nine hundred and some-odd feet long...the model is 11 feet long...so...what...1/80-1/90 scale, maybe? Ya'll do the math for me!
