Painting the Mondoshawan, from "The fifth element"
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, May 25, 2007 3:17 PM
I just got my kick-butt kit of the Mondoshawan and wanted some painting tips, they appear copper with very light silver washes in places, and a wash of burnt red-brown,but on the deluxe DVD the plating looks like thin stainless steel,or aluminum possibly plated or washed.I am guessing the base is limestone, with a heavy wash. Thanks for any help,as I am drilling and cutting the resin for leds and fiber optics, along with added spikes for rank.

Those, the robot turkey looking things? I don't know why but they allways reminded me of a turkey.

The really do seem to be kind of a nearly polished, but aged, bronze color (without the green patina)....with very mild highlights and darker colors in the recesses.
The base would probably be very light tan - assuming that the Mondoshawan is being represented as being in the temple where the Good Doctor (Aziz! LIGHT!!) met his demise.
I found a pic of this model (the same one you purchased?) on the web - and it's pretty close to what's on the DVD....if you try to follow what's seen here, you'll be pretty close.

PLease post pics of your build as you make progress - I'd love to see it.
The Fifth Element is one of my all time favorite movies.....Gary Oldman is simply incredible as the evil Zorg.....and Chris Tucker (as Ruby Rhod) is a hoot!
Milla Jovovich is pretty easy on the eye, as well.
Good luck, mate!

Cheers, LeeTree

Yes, I would be very interested in knowing where one could find this kit.

I'd be interested in finding a kit of either of their ships.  Or that big ole herkin' Earth ship.  Sign - With Stupid [#wstupid]

The company that produces the kit is "Gung Ho Sci-fi"models,the kit was supposed to be a hollow cast resin, but mine is a good, heavy almost flawless casting. The kit is in 1/8 scale, and comes with base and piller, with an element stone and an extra arm with a key.The key is lame,as you get a metal rod and two thin sheet styrene pieces to make the four sides of the key,in which you have to carve the detail.I went a much easier route,by using photo-etched copper from a craft store, that used the copper for angel or fairy wings, for dolls and cut my key shapes from these,as they are tiny. This kit is pricey,at $100.00 but I am 100% pleased with my purchase.I wish all  resin kits, were this good.I will post some pics,I am working on about 5 things at once!,God,I love modeling! Thanks again.

The only other "fifth element" kits I have been able to locate is "Lee loo",a couple of Corbin Dallas, busts and a Zorg Gary oldman bust.I just ordered a beautiful "Diva" resin kit,and have a resin replica,on the way from E-bay,of Bruce Willis' hero handgun.I know of one company that produces mini resin models of the "Flost in paridise"floating hotel, and Zorg's ship.I saw a 1/24 scale solid cast resin taxi,on E-bay but stopped bidding at $75.00.I am making 1/12 masters, for making my own taxi, with complete interior and figures, the top and bottom halves of the taxi will be vacuformed, with resin interior and figures. The mondoshawan in my opinion is still the best kit,as there is almost no clean up,the pic futher up the post is indeed, the mondoshawan kit I purchased. Thanks, guys!,I'll try to dig up the address for the small ships.

These businesses are in no way connected to me! Only one of them seems to link, so try cutting and pasting into your search bar...

I can't find the modoshawan bust link at the moment...

The bobble head at forbidden planet is not out yet , but looks good and may make a good basis for a more accurate kitbash!

Cheers

Snow does the same thing, bleaches your eyes out so that when you see color it looks SO vibrant!

This will be a good chance to get out the Alclad and lay on layers of Titanium gold in very thin layers for your highlights.

Alclad Stainless Steel is a very dark color that builds up great in layers and you can modify it by addingother colors from the line. Pale aluminum brings the color up and I have added regular enamles to it as well to change the tone.

Please post progress pics. I will have progress pics of my latest tonight :D

OOP'S,sorry,I don't think I'm supposed to do it that way,it's my first time and had to use a web-cam at that!LOL Somebody set me straight, before I mess up the web-site,I'm an old fart, remember? That being said,I used a bright gold spray paint,no primer on the body and head,in the process of putting multiple thin washes of burnt umber,I airbrushed a thin layer of non-toxic yellow glass stain as a sealer over the gold.I used all cheap craft paints for the Mondoshawan and base, which is being patched into a foamboard floor for a diorama, the base was painted with MM modern sand, and stippled with a golden brown followed by a little burnt umber in the mixture,I am also making walls. There is still lots of work to do on the mondoshawan,I lightly drybrushed a thin water based silver on places on the shoulders. The pic of the element stone is closest to the color of the base,as I used monitor light to shoot it,instead of fluorescent on the rest of the pics, big difference.

The pics are quite awful,it was a logitech web cam,my digital camera bit the dust, which is cool,it was obsolete anyway at 2 mp!lol I'm going to best buy to try and find at least a 5mp camera with a manual macro focus,I have about 5 different sets of tripods which is great help when taking macro close-ups,when you get the lens that close to the model, you need a very steady hand or you will have focus problems,I normally use my smallest tripod.I have only found one flaw in the kit,the outer thighs from the side view don't have the oval shaped plating,I only discovered this by watching the bonus disc in the 2 disc set, showing the mondoshawans standing in place and turning in circles in screen tests, but this will be an easy fix with any quality 2 part epoxy putty, the back walls of the diorama won't be entirely accurate as my foamboard base for the case is only 12" by 12",if I tried to do the entire chamber,I would need about a 5' by 5' base! I drafted some corrected upscale drawings, and with the help of one of my radio control buds,we are building a much larger version that walks and moves, using a Robosapien I got on clearence for 20 bucks.
