AMT's Startrek 3 Piece USS Enterprise Set #6618
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 19, 2003 3:24 AM
Hey gang, need help: I've had a model of AMT's Startrek for three years that I'm now thinking of building and I'v e been going over the specs and the suggested paint scheme but I'm a bit stumped, not only by the pieces themselves (three ships, one large, two smaller. Also, the suggested paint color for the overall ship is light gray for the larger ship, semi-gloss white for the smaller ships.) My problem is that I wonder how ships hurtleing through space at thousands of miles per hour could possibly be those colors. Would it be possible to instead do them in chrome Barefoil, maybe the muted chrome color and paint in the other detailed parts which call for colors such as black, orange-red, blue-gray, red, etc. Another thing: does anyone have any ideas about how to mask such a thing? I have just about every kind of masking material including the masking gel from Micro-Mark tools.

I'm completely lost why you think spaceships can't be colors.

Although the instrux quote the wrong colors anyway.
The 1701-D is very pale blue (I use RLM76) with a very pale green aztec pattern (but at that scale I skip the green pattern).
The 1701-A is overall white.
The original series 1701 is light ghost gray.

Best to drop in at the CultTVMan bboards at http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/forumdisplay.php?f=15 and ask your questions. There are a boatload of Trek experts there :).

I might be mistaken- but I'm pretty sure there are after market decals for that set that reproduce the "tile" patterns on the ships.
Check out starship modeler's great website- they'd know.

Dave Tomita makes an excellent set for all of the 2500th scale Enterprises. I bought the D set to use on my carrier conversion I've been working on. I may actually finish it someday. Wish I had pics to show.

Thanks to StevenQ, JohnP and justimagine for the quick replies. Just discovered CultTVman yesterday and I will surely look into his site for some answers and ideas. It would be real nice if I could find decals to use in place of a paint job. By the way JohnP, who was your grandfather, the captain of the Titanic?
