Scout Trooper Revamp
Posted by Schweinhund227 on Friday, February 22, 2008 7:58 PM

Hello Peoples...

Another Star Wars Modeler!!!

I got out of the AFV world a few years back … So I rekindled my luv for Sci Fi modeling …

I bought a few AMT kits as they were cheap and I got stuck on the ROTJ Speeder bike…  which became the Scout Project. which is now going on its second year !!!

Like many of you I found out the Scout Trooper didn’t fit at all and didn’t even sit right on the bike… So…  I cut him in pieces and modified each part !

Some of you may be acquainted with my projects… and if not… here is where it led me !!! yes I am a Scout Freak !

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/thefouramigos.jpg

I wasn’t satisfied with the Helmet….so I made a new one… and tried it for size on my BattleFront Sniper,  Yeah.. it used to be an AMT Scout.

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04301.jpg

So…. Now that I liked the way my New helmet looked;  I made a bunch of copies and replaced all my Helmets… on all my scouts…  Now I am working on replacing my Shoulder pads and will call it the day on Modifying so many Scouts.. and will try to Finish them and move on with my life !

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04335_resize.jpg

I have started to build a base to set them in an Endor Diorama, WiP

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04423.jpg

The speeders are for the most part OOB and I only replaced the Power conduits and Throttle cables and sanded all the seems and that’s it for the Bikes…..   With a little luv they shine on their own!  I always liked the way they came out….   Right now everything is Primed or getting their first Base Coats… nothing is finished…

Hope you didn’t mind me,  dumping so many pictures all at once…?

I am trying to finish this Project by late spring or Mid summer and move on.. to the Scout Sniper project which is also... PENDING...   take care and hope to hear from some of you !

OUT !

Very nice!!!

I have one in the stash and knowing full well in advance that it will not fit, I plan on cutting up my Tb and fitting him properly, I really want to reposition one arm and have him firing the pistol.  I checked your Photobucket and your doing fantastic work! I love the four amigos, very lifelike and well planned.

Can you expand on how you are cutting and repositioning the figs? I was going to cut away all the joints and fix the shapes of all the armor then rebuild the arms and legs individual joints with epoxy. If you have a process that is obviously working for you please let us know!!!!!

I was working on my 1:1 scale pistol tonight before I came in to check the forums, very nice to see your work!

here's one you will get a kick out of:

well...  Thank you !

If you are working on your 1:1 blaster...  you are way better suited to correct and Modify the Scouts outfit!  Having a Full size suit... is just the Best way to make sure you don't miss anything.....  I just wish my wife would not Leave me.. if I ordered one... LOL but that's another story!

As far as moving or adjusting the poses... on the 1/10 AMT dudes...    if you plan to totally gut out the armor... and just fill-in the MEAT later on.. with APOXIE Putty from AVES.    that's gonna be a big job.... but you would have full control on what you want him to look like.

I corrected most of the parts;  but obviously not all of them and to various degree of correctness...   as you MOTTO says..  Build for yourself !

I will tell you that after CUTTING the whole figure...  I filled every parts I had with APOXIE PUTTY...  once harden I drilled them in the center and glued in pins made out of 12 gauge household wire.

I was able to move, rotate and adjust the pose I needed... then used C.A. Glue to fix it in place and then merged all the parts with more APOXIE Putty to secure the Stance...and blend the parts together....

Once satisfied...   I sanded and filled until the parts look good enough for Casting...

I later made molds and Cast my parts out of resin...    if more adjustments were needed I just Cut and repositioned the resin part...and so on.... much easier ... Apoxie Putty is your friend.. and its cheap !!!

I work very slowly and this is why I took almost 2 years to make all those guys...

I made the Sniper using the way you mentioned...  putting putty onto a wire frame till I had the shape I needed...  I keep working at him.. trying to make him the best one... but he is very demanding... and basically made of Apoxie putty by now..... there are not too many parts that are original on him let me tell you...

all my Bikers are 100% Resin !

I guess you can surf the Photo bucket...  I went thru many modifications over the years...

the photos at the top are the latest work....

My original AMT scout will go under the knife soon !  and get equipped with my new Helmet...

So he can be set next to the others and look the part !

take care... and Best of luck !!!

I'm lucky, my wife has a THING for TK's and even tho Im not really interested in going white armor, she would love it!  I would go for a TB tho, looks a lot more comfortable!

On the suits you are casting up, are you making one master in a sitting position that is corrected and then cutting to reposition and glue/putty everything up?

I have been using MagicSculp from TAP plastics, I will have to look into the Apoxie Putty.  Since I will only be doing one or maybe two bikers, I can get away with cutting and modifying the figures individually.  I see the molding is pretty soft in places so I am planning on cutting away the cummerbund bags and making them from scratch.

Keep the posts coming, your doing great work and your ground work looks fantastic too!

BTW here is what I worked on last night, I got the grip cut out and sanded to shape then put it on the reciever block. I have the plans downloaded from the Blaster Builders Club forums and they are pretty comprehensive!

Kotobukiya Star Wars Scout Trooper

Since I can't justify spending 90$ on something like that... * don't ask *

I tried to come close to it... and will be filling the Blanks with AVES Apoxie Putty and I will be Making a new Left Hand !!! in the wide open position !

THOSE ARE ONLY TEST SHOTS>>>>

Looks very nice. I always liked the pose of the Koto kit. I have GOT the itch and twitch to get the soon to be realeased Imperial Pilot, but I would rather have a kit so I can paint it myself.

Your pose looks good, is this your new head? it looks sharp.

How did you create the new heads, just start building up plastic and putty to shape?

Keep us updated! I got a new Zaku in the mail today, need to get to cutting plastic and painting on my TIE Interceptor.

Well David   Thank you for you Kind words...

The new helmet... came from Cutting the nose and moving it down a tad ! Building The Vents on the nose ridge! Added putty on the forehead to sculpt the Vents there as well...  and changed the Visor out line... and Flatten and Reshaped the Helmet Blinds

I added a slim coat of Apoxie Putty all over the mask to enable me to blend all the mods and enable me to add the ridge on the scouts cheeks.

I filled one of the Rear vents and Re-scribed the Parting line and added a hinge pivot point !

and flatten the top and gave the Brim a new outline...

You could say I re-sculpted the whole Head and I would believe you ... LOL

ITS NOT PERFECT... but I like it....  and that's enough for me !

Take care and Hope you enjoy your new Zaku !

My Zaku is a blast, its been a great build so far. I dont think most people even know that the scout mask titls up like a welders helmet.  Carrying on with other projects here for the time, still got plenty to do!

Kee us posted, this is a cool thread

Just stopping by for a quick update !   I started sculpting the LEFT hand !

Started with a Guitar string Skeleton pinched onto a little Brass tube !

And added some AVES  Apoxie Putty ! to form the fingers and merge it back to the arm.  and use the remainder AVES putty to Backfill my previous Carving of the Limbs !

I am very interested in watching the rest of this build, please take a couple of closeups of the hand, sculpting digits has always been my weak point. I had to resculpt an ear last year on a female elf.  Than Palpatine for epoxy putty! I really should get her done! Shes awesome!

Did you do the fingers in sections, letting the base layer of putty set up and then move on to the next, or did you do it all at the same time with the putty mixed at once?

Hello David !

For the Left Hand; It was my First Open Hand BTW!   I asked Google, on how to make hands.. !  Sounds stupid but there is tons of Utube movies of sculptors showing their tricks of the trade... that's where I got the idea on the Guitar strings for my fingers...

I made little cigars by rolling a little bit of "Mixed" putty and cut a workable lengths and just slipped it over my fingers bones !!!

I used some rounded tools to part the fingers apart and shaped the Thumb!  Making sure the Guitar strings remained in the center on each fingers...

Roughing the general look of the glove... basically that's what I have done...

I didn't take any shots of it Cured!!! But I will revisit the glove for sure... I need to add more meat to the fingers.. Since it's a gloved hand.. It has to be a little fatter than normal.

I actually ripped the figure apart the other day!  Since is was made of Rejected parts The Chest was terrible and hard to sand smooth, it was riddled with air bubbles, so I Cast a few new parts; a new Chest piece and a new Right Boot w/Holster!

I have packed the “joints and stomach” areas and details the cummerbund and the Butt Flap like I call it…. I will add some pictures if I get to the figure during the week end…

Don’t worry too much about things…  Just do it…!  If you don’t like it.. Take it off…  Right now I am contemplating on removing the Right arm and give it different pose...  still playing with the idea...

That’s the beauty about this Hobby…. You can always start over !   Keep in touch I should have more pictures soon !

you know I see that Youtube and I imagine GoogleVid is growing in terms of actual useful how-to vids. One of our own local modelers just produced his first vid on how to use Castrol Super Clean on twenty year old paint to clean up a K'Tinga.  If I could figure out how to get video into my computer ( I have a 8mm camera) I would love to do some stuff like that.

did you try mixing talcum powder to medium super glue (SG/TC) to fill your voids? it works great. Posted a tute on how to do it here last year. Love it, quick and never shrinks.

keep us updated. Im working on one of my resin beauties now  but i dont want to post pics until it is done, its going for competition next weekend.

Im not grabbing the bolt head detail mentally. Where will that go?

VERY cool work you have here.  I can just SEE a rotten log in front of the TB in the grass!

Sorry....

the Bolts details are a set of Hinges for the Bikes  Thruster Vanes...

I did a prototype one last year... on the AMT Speeder...  worked ok.. nothing to write home about....but you can see a small resemblance...

if only...  I had the time and $$$  to dedicate fully at producing this kit...

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04552_resize.jpg

Just to let you know that it took me over 8 hrs to pour and clean up this KIT....

Too much time I don't have....

but you can always... look at it...  cuz it might be the last time you see
it...

The Garage kit enterprise isn't.... an easy trip in the park !!!!  Overhead cost and all...  drove me.... in a corner.

Better slip in the shadows.... before I regret it !

The Project moved a little ahead this week....  slow but steady !

I got some new Springs from MechaSkunk and replaced all my Power Conduits on all my Bikes with this tightly wound 4mm Spring Cut in manageable lengths... it was really easy to adapt to my Bikes...

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04568_resize_exposure.jpg
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04569_resize_exposure.jpg

the little bit of frosting is from the C.A. Glue fuming but.. that's ok... a little clean up before Priming and it won't be seen !

Had to replace the Sleeve on the Turbo Charger ! (I call it that) with a Brass tubing Sleeve to accept the Spring and it looks and feels great !

Today I finished Cleaning all the Helmets of all my Scouts.. 7 in Total ! for now !!! LOL

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04561_resize_exposure.jpg
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04563_resize_exposure.jpg
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04567_resize_exposure.jpg

and Sprayed a Base Coat of Reefer White and So Far So Good !!! I like the finish and can't wait to start painting the Visors and mouth pieces... to bring this Face Alive... and Move on to the Bodies...

Since this Project is stretch over many Months.. of experimenting and fussing around... I had some good Casting to work with and some bad ones...

I was getting a lot of micro bubbles... while sanding and preping the armor and other body parts.... and Broke down and Decided to use my Mr. Surfacer Primer for Resin !

http://www.heavyarmourstudio.com/images/mr_resin_primer.jpg

This stuff is Great... took care of all my Micro bubbles... )( Voids )( and now I can move on....

I also purchased some Glass Lenses from MechaSkunk and some aluminum bezels to cradle them and they turned out to be the perfect match for my Boot Blaster Scope !

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04573_resize.jpg
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04574_resize.jpg
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04571_resize.jpg

So I am in the process of doing all my Blasters that way. the only small problem.. is Cosmetic.. Don't know if I should Use the Green or Red Lenses...??? what you guys think ???

I also Order Larger lenses to be part of my imperial Binoculars I am working on... should make things interesting... for my Next Project !

I Want to take a minute to thanks "Robert Fuchs" from MechaSkunk to have Helped me tremendously with Acrylic products and such... his store is full of surprises....

I hope to bring you more pictures soon ! of some completed scouts.. not Just White Dummies...

oh.. forgot... I got myself some Laser Printer Decal Paper and made a series of Bar Codes and helmet logos, Far from Perfect I know !!! but I don't have access to an Alps Printer.. so.. those will have to do !!!

http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u255/schweinhund227/DSC04566_resize_exposure.jpg

I am set... can't wait to use them on my Crew !

After I installed some ¼” Acrylic Rods ....   I ended up picking 2 of my Scout and their Bikes of the Ground...

Literally in pieces and … Spend a lot of time… reconstructing them…

I am almost there… still a few days of work to get back on track…   was very..  Disappointing to see the Mess….

I should have tested the rods first… But having played around with some in the past… I was confident they would hold up !   but they didn’t..

I have now switched to Solid Brass Rods..  painted them Foliage Green and so far so good…

I am in the process of adding Straps to all my Scouts;  Some on the Boot holster and thighs and two on each arms to compliment the Armor pads.

I have added a few shots …   and pushing hard to have this ready for Next month show in T.O.

A lot of paint Flaked off after the Fall... and I also sanded some areas that needed attention and I am ready to paint.... should be giving a nice coat of silver to all bikes... then Seal that with Future Floor Polish and in a few days...  Coat in Tarnished Black and then a nice top coat of Star Wars Brown...   which will then undergo some Distressing...  to show some siver thru.

I don't want to show up with New Speeders...  the Star Wars Purist would not like that...

So..  I'll keep you updated...  as I go along !

OUT!
